Chloe tried one more time to blow a bubble. When she stuck her tongue in the gum and blew, it flew out of her mouth and into the dirt. Mom wouldn't let her have another piece. The next day, she practiced with a new piece. Chloe had been chewing her gum for a good, long while. It was ready.
Her friends surrounded her, each hopeful that she would blow the biggest bubble ever. Chloe sighed deeply, and her long bangs fluttered on her forehead. Now she readied the wad of gum and began blowing and blowing and blowing. When it popped, her friends' eyes grew as big as her bubble. Chloe looked up. Her bubble gum was hanging in pieces from her bangs. Everyone tried to help her, but the gum only became more tangled in her hair.

Tina was a little monster who lived in a city called Monsteria. She always brushed her teeth and cleaned her room and did everything her mother told her. In fact, Tina was the best little monster in the city. At least, that's what everyone thought. What they didn't know, however, was that Tina wanted to break the number one law in all of Monsteria. She wanted to meet a human being.
One day, Tina went for a walk on the beach. Suddenly, she discovered footprints in the sand. She looked all around her, but there were no other monsters on the beach. Further down the beach she found something else. It was a tiny shoe. Tina had read about human beings in her school books, and she wondered if this shoe could belong to a human. What would a human be doing here in Monsteria? she wondered to herself.

Monsters!
by J. Robbins
The monsters live beneath my bed;
They're purple, yellow, pink, and red.
They come out when the moon is high
and poke my legs as they run by.
They dance around my bed all night;
They don't know how to be polite.
They steal my homework and my toys
and keep me up with all their noise.
If they don't go to sleep quite soon,
I'll put them in my sister's room!

Passage 1
Jenny's New Life
by Alan Smithee
Jenny felt all alone. She had felt that way since moving with her family to Big Springs. The name of the town was wrong. Big Springs was not big. It was a small town that was surrounded by even smaller towns.
Jenny had not made any friends since moving. In fact, she had only seen two kids since she got to Big Springs. They were both babies. She was too old to play with babies. Instead of playing with friends, she sat in her backyard and played by herself.
She hoped that she would make some new friends when summer ended and school started. She was tired of playing by herself.
Passage 2
City Life
by Alan Smithee
Ralph read a book in which the main character had a cool nickname. He decided that he would give himself a cool nickname, too. He started calling himself "Jet." He asked everybody else to call him "Jet," but only his friend Marty did.
Ralph and Marty loved playing together outside, but they had to be careful. They lived in New York City. A big city like that is always busy. It was dangerous for 10-year-old kids like them to play outside. They wanted to play on the sidewalk, but there were always buses, taxis, and fire trucks rushing by.
They usually ended up playing in Ralph's room. Ralph's dad would give them snacks to eat there. They created a hideout under the bed that nobody else knew about.

What is D, Jenny does not have anyone to play with, but Ralph has a friend?
The Robin and the Tree
On the banks of a river stood an old tree.
It was really large, green, and shady.
The tree grew fruits juicy and tasty,
And its flowers were red and golden.
All around it grew other young trees.
There was a little nest made of twigs and hay,
On a long branch of the tall, old tree.
Red Robin flew around the nest on the tree,
In it lived her five, tiny, baby robins.
She worked hard all day to feed them all.
Sometimes she caught some big, plump worms,
And at other times she caught some bugs.
She also cleaned her nest and mended it,
Never was a busier bird than she!

Judy slowly opened her eyes. She sat up in her bed, smiled, and said, "Good morning, Mom."
"What do you want to do for your birthday today?" her mom asked.
Judy thought long and hard. "Let's go to the movies. I want to see Charlotte's Web. Mary said the movie is better than the book," Judy finally said.
"Okay, we will go to the movies. Let's go downstairs so you can open your birthday gift," her mom answered.

adapted from The Fox and the Grapes
by Aesop
One day, a fox happened to spot a beautiful bunch of ripe grapes hanging from a vine growing on the branches of a tree. The grapes seemed ready to burst with juice, and the fox's mouth watered as he stared longingly at them.
The bunch hung from a high branch, and the fox had to jump for it. The first time he jumped, he missed it by a long way. So, he walked back a short distance and took a running leap at it, only to fall short once more. Again and again, he tried, but in vain.
Finally, he sat down and looked at the grapes in anger.
"What a fool I am," he said. "Here I am wearing myself out to reach a bunch of sour grapes. These grapes are not even worth looking at."
And off he walked, full of scorn for the grapes.
