The rock cycle shows us how rocks change over time. Let's begin with magma erupting from a towering volcano. Next, the magma, now called lava, cools and hardens into igneous rock. Then, over thousands of years, sun, wind, rain, and freezing temperatures cause the rocks to break down into smaller pieces. After that, the pieces continue to weather, slowly breaking down into sediments. Finally, winds, flowing water, and gravity gradually move the sediments down the sides of the volcano and beyond.
