When comparing two different fractions of a pizza that's the same size, how can you tell which fraction is larger?

Assuming the pizza is the same size, the fraction with a smaller denominator is larger because it's divided into less parts. For example, 2/8 of a pizza is smaller than 1/3 because I'm sharing the pizza with more people.

Michael ordered a pizza and ate 4/8 of it. Kari ordered the same pizza and ate 3/4 of it. Who ate more pizza? How do you know? 

Kari ate more because she ate 3/4 of the pizza (that is divided into fourths). If we made this equivalent to 8 slices instead of cut into fourths, she would have eaten 6/8 slices which is greater than 4/8.

Let's say you are given a fraction and your teacher says to write it as a product of a whole number and unit fraction. What does she mean by this? provide an example.  

An example would be 6 x 1/8 would represent 6/8 because I am multiplying a whole number (6) to a unit fraction (1/8) to find the product of the fraction that it represents (6/8).
