UNEXPECTED behavior. Your friend might be making other students in the group feel sad and not included.

EXPECTED behavior. Friends enjoy each other and want to spend time doing things together.
Your grandpa gives you $10. As you walk away you hear him ask, "Didn't you forget something?" What does grandpa mean? a) You forgot the money. b) You forgot to say "thank you." c) You forgot to tell me where you're going.
B. When someone gives you something, it is expected that you say thank you in acknowledgement. Grandpa's question is his clue to help you remember that a thank you is needed.

UNEXPECTED behavior. If someone asks you to leave him alone, it is EXPECTED that you would walk away. By continuing to bother him, you are using UNEXPECTED behaviors and causing others to have weird thoughts about your behavior.
Mary has her graded science test on her desk and she is sitting tall with a huge smile on her face. She received a good grade. Is this a SMART guess or WACKY guess?
SMART guess. She is sitting tall because she feels proud of her accomplishment. She has a smile because she is happy she did well on the test.
You ask some of the boys if you can join their basketball game. One of them says, "Our teams are even right now." What does the boy mean? a) You can be on my team b) We don't have enough players c) We don't need another player right now
C. When the boy says that the teams are even, he is telling you that if you were to join in, the teams would become uneven and it would give a team an unfair advantage.
It is Tuesday morning. Matthew and his brother have left their house and are walking toward the end of the street. Both boys have backpacks and lunch boxes. Susie thinks Matthew and his brother are on their way to school. Is this a SMART guess or WACKY guess?
SMART guess. Susie knows it is a school day and the boys are headed to the bus stop. They have backpacks and lunch boxes which they need for school.
You see your friend on Monday morning and start a conversation with him by asking him what he did over the weekend. Is this an EXPECTED or UNEXPECTED behavior?
EXPECTED behavior. When you see your friends, it is an expected behavior to talk about what happened over the weekend or the previous night especially if you know someone did something really exciting.
You are sitting at the table in a small group and the person sitting next to you is tapping his fingers and stomping his feet. Is he using whole body listening? What tells you this?
He is not using whole body listening. His fingers and feet are not still. He needs to practice keeping his feet and fingers still to show he is using whole body listening.
Your class is going on a field trip. Your teacher goes over the rules and says, "Please remember that you are fifth graders." What does your teacher mean? a) Remember what group you're in. b) Remember that she teaches fifth grade. c) Fifth graders should behave well.
C. By the fifth grade, you have learned the expected behaviors when on a field trip. It is expected that you are aware of and follow these behaviors without reminders.
Marissa and Joey were playing at recess. They went over to Katie to play and she said she didn't want to play with them today. Marissa and Joey were upset and felt that Katie doesn't want to be their friend anymore and they should tell a teacher. Is this a smart guess or a wacky guess?
WACKY guess. Just because Katie didn't want to play today doesn't mean she isn't their friend. Maybe she needed a break.
A fellow student is talking about the new puppy he got and you say "Wow, that's cool!! What kind of dog did you get?". He tells you what kind of dog and you want to be honest so you say "those dogs are ugly." Is this an EXPECTED or UNEXPECTED behavior?
UNEXPECTED behavior. By asking what kind of dog he got, you are showing that you are listening with both your brain and heart. Even if you don't like the kind of dog your friend has, that is an INSIDE THOUGHT.
Jason’s aunt is serving homemade chocolate pie for dessert. Before she gives Jason a piece, she asks, “What’s the magic word?”. What does it mean? A. Do a magic trick to get pie, B. Be polite and say "please", or C. Say thank you before you get pie?
B. It is an EXPECTED behavior to use manners and say "please" when asking for something. Jason's aunt is giving him a cue to use his manners by asking "what's the magic word?"
You sit down next to a group of kids in the library. One of them says, "We're studying for a test." What does this student mean? a) Someone else is sitting there. b) We'd like you to help us study. c) We don't want you to sit here.

UNEXPECTED behavior. You should not talk about George's clothes to anyone else. You should go let George know
You are talking to your friend while the teacher is teaching her lesson. Is this an EXPECTED or UNEXPECTED behavior?
UNEXPECTED behavior. Speaking while the teacher (or anyone else) is speaking makes it difficult for others to hear the teacher. You are causing others to miss out on important information being shared. Your conversation is best held on the playground or during lunch.
Alyssa did not study for her science test. She played video games instead of studying. When she did not pass the test, her teacher said, “Alyssa, it’s your own fault.” What does it mean? A. Alyssa’s teacher does not like her., B. The teacher made the test too hard., C. Alyssa did not make good choices and study for the test.
C. Because Alyssa chose to not study, the grade she got was the result. Her teacher may not have known Alyssa played videos, but she knew Alyssa did not study and therefore got the grade she deserved; that it was Alyssa's fault she didn't pass the test.
