Thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm contains lightning, and lightning kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes! Do you know what to do to remain safe during a thunderstorm? First, go inside a sturdy building or a vehicle and close the windows. Furthermore, the National Weather Service recommends that you stay inside for at least thirty minutes after the last rumble of thunder is heard. Do not use telephones or electrical equipment. Avoid taking showers or baths. If you are unable to get safely inside a building, avoid taking cover beneath tall, isolated trees. Also avoid water, high ground, and metal objects. Fluoride is a chemical that can that hardens your tooth enamel and makes it harder for acids to burn through your teeth. Some water bottling companies add fluoride to their water, so drinking water with fluoride in it will also help. Another way you could prevent cavities is to avoid sugary foods, and chew sugar-free gum. Bacteria loves sugar, and when you eat lots of sugar they eat, too! Polar bears live in a snowy white world, but their fur isn't actually white. They have long outer hairs, which protect their soft, thick undercoat. These hairs are hollow and clear. The thinner hairs of their undercoat are also colorless. Polar bear hair looks white because they have air spaces in their hairs that scatter light of all colors. When we see the reflection of the light waves, we see the color white. Did you know that polar bears were once a close reflective to the brown bear? Scientists think that, over time, polar bears moved to the Arctic, where they adapted to their surrounding by developing fur that would help them blend in with the harsh, white Arctic ice. Not all polar bears look white, though. If you've ever seen a polar bear in a zoo, you may have noticed that its fur can appear almost green. Scientists discovered that algae from the pond waters in the bears' enclosures made the bears turn green. They learned these algae were found not on the surface of the hairs buts inside the hollow hairs!
