What Is a Paragraph?

What if a writer or novelist decided to write a 300-page book with no breaks in the text for new ideas, new chapters, or even character dialogue? It would be so overwhelming that the reader would probably take one look and close the book forever. When writing is divided up into manageable parts that are cohesive, it's much easier for the reader to take in and process. A paragraph is a distinct segment of writing, often includes more than one sentence, and is separated from other paragraphs and text by a space.

Paragraphs break up text into manageable chunks that are easily read and visually make it more appealing and less daunting. The word paragraph comes from the Latin word paragraphos, which is roughly translated to mean a short-stroke marking a break in sense. The term graph is Latin for writing.

There is often some confusion about what the difference is between a paragraph and an essay. The best way to understand the difference is to think of the essay as a bigger version of a paragraph. A paragraph is made up of a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. An essay has all the same parts; only instead of sentences, an essay is made up of paragraphs.

This essay is about one of the most interesting conquerors in the world, a little corporal named Napoleon Bonaparte. A man who was an amazing strategist in battle, became the Emperor of France, and he almost ruled Europe!  Born at Ajaccio, Corsica on August 15, 1769, Napoleon lived with his family until he went to military school when he was 15. The boy experced that jobs were given to the richest not the smartest so going up the ranks was hard for him until France had their revolution and he skyrocketed the ranks. He died at Saint Helena on May 5, 1821.  I chose Napoleon because he was very skilled which helped him during a time called “The Napoleonic Wars” which proved how great of a leader he was. Also how he did many great things for society but he gained power. (he even crowned himself emperor!)  Napoleon is important to learn about because his strategies to take on the enemy are amazing and The Napoleonic Code was a successful codification.

Napoleon wanted to change with the employment system in France, The jobs were given to the people who were rich and powerful, not the intelligent and skilled.  Napoleon was a man full of ambition, we never tried to give up and he tried to do his best. He once said “Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools.” What he meant was nothing was impossible and that giving up was disappointing.  Many historians argue about Napoleon's character, he was the man who gave freedom everywhere he went or he only gave freedom to the people so he could get power. Depending on what you think of him in a positive or negative light we must admit that Napoleon will forever be a legend.

The qualities Napoleon had that made him a great leader was that he was supportive to his men, in 1796 there was a small battle with the French and Austrians in Italy (Napoleon’s first battle leading a military campaign). When Napoleon arrived at Italy he found the army to be poorly organized, but with supportive speeches and him also fighting with the army he gained the respect of his men. When he told them to go across the only bridge to finish the battle, the men went in rows. (battle of Lodi) Here Napoleon felt special and where he said “I foresaw what I might be. Already I felt the Earth flee from beneath me, as if I were being carried from the sky.”  Napoleon dreamed about becoming a great conqueror but the problem with France's corruption in jobs was fixed with the bloody French Revolution where everyone was gonna be equal (even if too many heads came off). Napoleon didn’t agree with the riots but he supported it to get up the ranks, where he put down things that went against the revolution. By doing this he went up the ranks. Napoleon went on a journey to Egypt, when he came back an unpopular government called the Directory was ruling France. A person named Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes wanted to stage a coo on the Directory so after that a new form of government was made called Consulate where Napoleon basically made himself dictator of France.  Now Napoleon was in charge of France where he made the Napoleonic code which gave rights to men, JUST MEN! Even with the unequal gender rights everything was pretty fair, religion was brought back so everyone in France was a tad bit equal.  This gave men the right to live with no social pyramid that the old French lifestyle had.  It was very successful and the French people loved Napoleon even more!

All this giving revolutionary thoughts were concerning other countries so a thing called the “Napoleonic wars” happened. Napoleon spread the ideas of the French Revolution everywhere he went.  Napoleon had shown that no matter what rank in society you’re in, if you try hard you can achieve anything.  Napoleon was a mixed person, like I said, was it all  for rights for everyone from their cruel government or did he all do it for all the power for himself. I feel that Napoleon was a bit of both, he cared for the people and his power.  In the end Napoleon is one of the greatest conquerors of all time. Because of Napoleon the world will know that wherever you’re from, you can become the most powerful person ever. And everyone should also know, he was normal height for his time. (He was 5’ 6’’)

He still was short.
