How did the Dead Sea get its name?

It's so salty nothing but microscopic organisms can live in it.

  • The water of this lake (despite the name it's actually a lake) is roughly nine times as salty as the ocean. Bacteria and microscopic fungi survive in the water and in times of flood when the salinity level drops, algae can thrive temporarily. Although the salty water is very healing externally, you must be careful not to drink any - swallowing a mouthful can kill you.
