Describe how close the particles are in each state of matter.

Solid: tightly packed together

Liquid: loosely packed

Gas: spread far apart

200

what makes sugar and salt special when putting it in a mixture?

it can dissolve in water

200

Does the mass of mixtures change when after you mix the substances? Explain why or why not.

NO because matter cannot be destroyed.

If two objects are pulling on something and it is not moving, the force is ....

balanced

200

an graduated cylinder measures an object's...

volume

300

Describe how the particles in each state of matter MOVE.

Solid- particles vibrate

Liquid- particles move past each other

Gas- particles move fast

Describe the physical properties of coffee and water BEFORE and AFTER you mix them.

BEFORE: coffee is brown, crystals, solid. Water is clear and liquid

AFTER: liquid is brown, no more crystals

300

AFTER you mix salt and water OR sugar and water, the appearance of the solution is....

clear or cloudy

Lili hurt her leg and needs to go to the nurse. Sebastian pushes her down the hall with a chair and Tovar helps pull her down the hall with a rope tied around the chair. How is energy being transferred to move Lili down the hall?

Sebastian pushes her, Tovar is pulling her transferring energy to Lili in the chair causing her to move.

Explain why the balloon changed shape, using evidence from the models, AND describe what will happen if the gallon continues to be heated.

The gallon changed shape because the water evaporated and turned into water vapor. The gas particles spread far apart which caused the gallon to expand. If the gallon continues to be heated, it will keep pushing to the sides.

What physical properties do oil and sand have in common? What do they have different?

common: insoluble in water

different: oil is liquid, sand is solid
