Data stored on a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet. AWS is an example of this.
What is Cloud Data
Electronically stored information
What is ESI
An electronic communication sent or received via a data application designed for that purpose (e.g. MS Outlook, Lotus Notes, Google Gmail)
What is an email?
Locating, scoping, and defining all potential sources of Electronically Stored Information (ESI) that may be relevant to a legal matter, investigation, or regulatory request.
What is Identification?
Data stored in long term repositories for the storage of files and records.
What is Archived Data?
Anyone who holdspotentially responsive data.
What is a Custodian.
(Portable Document Format): A universal format that preserves the exact layout, fonts, and graphics of a document, making it ideal for sharing and printing.
What is a PDF?
A communication requesting the preservation, and the resulting preservation of information that is potentially relevant to current or a reasonably anticipated legal matter.
What is a Legal Hold?
Pre-defined, as in a database, with fields for name, address, social security information, or constraints on what can be entered.
What is Structured Data?
A file that is attached to another communication file; such as the attachment to a parent email.
What is a Child document?
Tagged Image File Format. A graphic file that is commonly used by litigation support vendors to create pictures of either digital or paper documents.
What is a TIFF?
The process of gathering and assembling ESI for review. The process may also include forensic collection.
What is Collection?
A form of media used to store copies of data that are created as a precaution against the loss or damage of the original data.
What is a Backup (i.e. Backup Tape)?
The processing, tracking and recording the movement, handling and location of electronic evidence chronologically from collection to production.
What is Chain of Custody?
Personal Stores Table. The compressed file used by Outlook to store an individual user’s email, contacts, calendar items, journal entries and notes.
What is a .pst file?
The delivery, to the requesting party, of documents and ESI that meet the criteria of the discovery request.
What is Production?
Exists where there are no constraints on the file organization or contents, such as word processing documents or e-mails saved on a computer’s hard drive or on a network server.
What is Unstructured Data (Information)?
An algorithm generated from a string of text, which represents a unique value for a specified set of data, like a digital fingerprint or a VIN number for a car.
What is a Hash Value?
A single file containing multiple documents and/or files that is usually in a compressed format such as a zip file.
Container File
The eDiscovery workflow which ingests data, extracts text and metadata, normalizes the data. Some systems include the data indexing and deduplication in their workflow.
What is Processing?
