You have 3 boxes: one contains only apples, one contains only oranges, and one contains both apples and oranges. The boxes are incorrectly labeled. You are allowed to pick one fruit from one box. How can you immediately label all the boxes correctly?

Pick a fruit from the box labeled "apples and oranges." Since the boxes are incorrectly labeled, this box must contain only one type of fruit. If you pick an apple, that box is the "apples" box. Then, the box labeled "oranges" must contain both fruits, and the box labeled "apples" must contain oranges.

You have a 5-liter jug and a 3-liter jug, and you need to measure exactly 4 liters of water. How do you do it?

Fill the 5-liter jug completely.

Pour the water from the 5-liter jug into the 3-liter jug until the 3-liter jug is full. This leaves 2 liters in the 5-liter jug.

Empty the 3-liter jug and pour the remaining 2 liters from the 5-liter jug into the 3-liter jug.

Fill the 5-liter jug again.

Pour from the 5-liter jug into the 3-liter jug until it is full. Since the 3-liter jug already has 2 liters, you will only be able to pour 1 liter, leaving exactly 4 liters in the 5-liter jug.

A man is looking at a picture of someone. His friend asks, "Who are you looking at?" The man replies, "Brothers and sisters, I have none. But the father of the person in the picture is my father’s son." Who is the person in the picture?

The person in the picture is the man’s son.

Father of the person in the picture = the man's father
My father's son = the man himself (he has no brothers/sisters)
So the person in the picture is his own son

You’re in a room with three light switches, each controlling one of three light bulbs in the next room. You can’t see the bulbs from the room with the switches. You can turn the switches on and off as many times as you like, but you can only enter the room with the bulbs once. How do you figure out which switch controls which bulb?

Turn on the first switch and leave it on for a few minutes

After a few minutes have passed, turn off the first switch and turn on the second one

Immediately enter the room with the bulbs.

The bulb that is on is controlled by 2 because it was the last you turned on. The bulb that is off but warm is controlled by 1, and the one that is off and cold is controlled by 3.

You have two ropes. Each rope has the property that if you light it on fire at one end, it will take exactly one hour to burn to the other end. However, the ropes do not burn at a uniform rate (e.g., half the rope might take 59 minutes to burn, and the remaining half could burn in 1 minute). How can you measure 45 minutes using these two ropes?

Light one rope at both ends and the other rope at one end. The first rope will burn completely in 30 minutes (since its burning from both ends). Once completely burned, light the other end of the second rope. It will burn in 15 minutes.

30 + 15 = 45
