Is the tomato a vegetable or a fruit? Scientifically speaking, a fruit grows from the fertilized ovary of a flower, while a vegetable is any edible part of a plant that isn't the fruit. Based on those definitions, a tomato is clearly a fruit. But in common practice, the matter has been debated for years. The United States Supreme Court even ruled on it back in 1886! Because tomatoes are served at most meals as part of the main course, and not dessert, the court ruled that they are vegetables. Nevertheless, the court of public opinion seems to have shifted in recent years back to the original ruling of botanists. Which means, yes, that's a fruit sauce you're pouring on your spaghetti.
