It seems to be the first time that the fall armyworm from the Americas has destroyed crops in Africa.  The fall armyworm is a larva or caterpillar.

The fall armyworms eat corn. They also eat wheat, millet and rice. These are important food sources for the people of southern and eastern Africa. Many areas there already do not have enough food. Chemical pesticides are poisons used to kill insects. They can help in the fight.

They have to try different ways to kill the worms. Besides pesticides, they can use natural methods. They can dig a trench or a ditch around a farm. The bugs might fall into it before they get to the farm. They can also bring in birds that will eat the worms.

The Erie Canal changed the way people moved goods and supplies in the mid 1800's.The 363 mile canal connected Albany, New York to Lake Erie in Buffalo for the first time.
