Challenge: For the Union, the Civil War was about keeping the country together. Please describe how the Union's goals changed, including at least one reason why they changed. 

(Only needs one reason): Abraham Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation which essentially made the Civil War about freeing enslaved people. He did this to weaken the Confederacy in the hopes that enslaved people would leave and fight for the Union. Another reason was to keep other countries from supporting the South. Finally, this cause was seen as a cause worth fighting for in the North, so more people signed up to fight.
