The ocean

100

What causes water to evaporate?

The sun's heat

100

Define Hydrosphere

All water on Earth

Lake Okeechobee is in Florida. The map below shows where the lake is in the state. How would water most likely move from the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Okeechobee?

A. by ocean water flowing up a river that joins with the lake.

B. by ocean flooding and water flowing overland into the lake.

C. by ocean water evaporating and entering the lake when it rains.

D. by water seeping through the ocean floor and welling up into the lake.

C. by ocean water evaporating and entering the lake when it rains

200

The process of changing back from a gas to a liquid due to cooling

Condensation

200

How does water normally leave the ocean to join the rest of the water cycle?

Through evaporation

200

What causes water vapor to change into liquid water again (condensation)

Cooling or lowering temperatures

200

The name for the gaseous form of water

Water vapor

300

What is the name of the world's largest reservoir?

The ocean

300

Define geosphere

All Earth's Land

300

A place where fluid collects on Earth

A reservoir

300

Which process plays the greatest role in removing water from the ocean?

A. Condensation

B. Evaporation

C. Precipitation

D. Runoff

B. Evaporation

400

Describe what happens to water molecules during condensation

Water Vapor molecules float freely and rise, as temperature cools the molecules slow down and begin to clump into droplets forming a cloud
400

What is one way the hydrosphere interacts with the geosphere

Erosion, Water from the hydrosphere can seep into the ground, becoming groundwater which is stored within the geosphere, etc

400

What causes clouds to form

Water vapor cooling and condensing in the atmopshere
400

How do drops of water form?

Drops of water can form when enough water vapor gets cold and condenses into liquid water. (

Rosita makes a model of the water cycle. She placed a small cup with some warm water inside a plastic bag and sets the bag in a sunny window. Rosita checks the model after 1 day. The figure below shows what Rosita observes

A. Cloud formation

B. Only water evaporation

C. Only water condensation

D. Both water evaporation and condensation

D. Both water evaporation and condensation

500

Describe one way the hydrosphere interacts with the atmosphere

The hydrosphere interacts with the atmosphere primarily through the process of evaporation, where water from the Earth's surface (oceans, lakes, rivers) evaporates into the atmosphere as water vapor, forming clouds which can later condense and fall back to the Earth as precipitation

500

Explain the entire water cycle process

1. Evaporation

  • Water from oceans, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water turns into water vapor due to heat from the Sun.
  • Transpiration from plants also contributes water vapor to the atmosphere.

2. Condensation

  • Water vapor cools as it rises in the atmosphere and changes into tiny droplets, forming clouds.
  • This process releases latent heat, which can fuel weather systems.

3. Precipitation

  • When water droplets in clouds combine and grow heavy, they fall to the Earth's surface as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
