Acadians

The Acadians were a group of French settlers in a place called Acadia, now known as Canadas Maritime provinces and parts of Eastern Quebec. Future generations of these settlers still call themselves Acadians.

Loyalists

The Loyalists were people in the American colonies who stayed loyal to Britain during the American Revolution. Before the war ended in 1783, many moved to places like the Maritimes, Ontario, and Quebec.

Black loyalists

Black Loyalists were African people who helped the British during the American Revolution. The British said they would give them freedom, safety, and land. But they were not treated the same as white soldiers. When the British lost the war, the Black Loyalists had to leave too. They got given "certificates of freedom" so they could go to Canada.
