What is a wampum belt and what is it for?

Wampum are purple and white beads made from seashells from the Atlantic coast.

Indigenous Peoples have used these beads as decoration, for specials ceremonies, and to trade with others. When two or more Indigenous groups came together to make agreements with each other, they might create a belt made of wampum beads to show their special relationship.

Why did Europeans originally call indigenous peoples "Indians"?

Early Europeans thought they had landed in India, so they called the indigenous people there "Indians".

Who are "Les Filles de Roi" and why are they important?

Les Filles de Roi means "daughters of the King". France wanted to make a stable colony in the New World, but there were not a lot of women, so the French King sponsored many young women to travel to New France and start families.

Who misnamed Canada and what's the story?

Two indigenous youths told French explorer Jacques Cartier about the route to kanata. This was actually the indigenous word for "village", but for lack of another name, Cartier used the word “Canada” to describe the entire area. Eventually, the name stuck and Europeans began referring to most of the area as Canada.
