What is the Resolution?
Stating a clear opinion on a topic, and then backing it up with reasons and evidence to try and convince someone else to agree
What is an Argument?
A struggle that characters face that can be internal or external
What is a conflict?
Language that is meant to be understood imaginatively rather than literally. Examples include metaphors and personification.
What is figurative (language)?
In a story told from this point of view, the narrator is a character in the story and uses pronouns such as I, me, and we.
What is First-person Point of View?
The turning point of a story. The point of greatest interest. The most exciting part.
What is the Climax?
A shortened version of a text stating the main ideas and important details, free from personal opinions
What is a summary?
The series of events in a story. It usually centers around a central conflict.
What is Plot?
In poetry, lines are grouped together to make this.
What is a stanza?
In a story told from this point of view, the narrator is outside the story and uses pronouns such as he, she, and they.

When the story becomes more and more complicated as the conflict develops and suspense builds.
What is Rising Action?
The writer’s reason for creating a particular work. It may be to persuade, to inform, to entertain, or share an experience.

The meaning or moral of the story, the central underlying message
What is Theme?
The voice that tells the story. The narrator of a poem.
What is the speaker?
An educated guess based on the clues or evidence given in a text
What is Infer/an Inference?
Usually the beginning of the plot, this establishes the setting, introduces the characters, and gives the reader important background information.
What is Exposition?
Words or phrases that show the connections between details. Sentence that leads into next paragraph.
What is a Transition?
A conversation between two or more characters, usually framed with quotation marks.
What is dialogue?
Words and phrases that appeal to a reader’s five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.
What is imagery?
The idea or emotion that is associated with a word. It may be positive, negative, or neutral.
What is connotation/connotative meaning?
Loose ends are tied up. Story moves toward the ending. Tension released.
What is Falling Action?
A debatable thesis that readers can agree with or disagree with. For example:
The minimum driving age should be raised to 18.
What is a Claim?
A long speech given by one character in a story (only one character is talking)
What is a Monologue?
A comparison of two things that have some quality in common. Contains a word such as like, as, resembles, or than. For example, "The Chihuahua was as brave as a lion"
What is a simile?
The process of rethinking and improving, or fixing, a piece of writing (ELA word)
