Define Energy

The ability to Work

100

Define Matter

Any substance that has mass and takes up space

100

What a causes Gravity?

Mass. Gravity is a distortion of time and space caused by an objects mass. All objects with mass have gravity

100

What forces must be balanced in order for a planet to retain an atmosphere?

The planet needs to have sufficient gravity and its surface cannot be too hot.

100

What is the oldest element?

Hydrogen

200

What is the ultimate source of energy on Earth?

The Sun

200

Define Thermal Energy

Energy created by the movement of particles (atoms), their movement produces heat

200

What two forces must be balanced for a stable orbit to occur?

Gravity and Velocity. There's a balance between one bodies gravity and another bodies velocity.

200

Compare and Contrast : Weather vs Climate

Weather - the daily state of the atmosphere

Climate - the average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.

300

What is the formula for calculating potential energy?

PE = m x g x h

m = mass (kg)

g = gravity (9.8 m/s2)

h = height (m)

300

What are the three main ways heat is transferred in our universe?

Conduction, Convection and Radiation

300

What are the three criteria for an object to be considered a planet as set by the International Astronomical Union?

  1. It is in orbit around the Sun.

  2. It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape).

  3. It has "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit.

300

How does warmer air behave?

When air is warmed, its particles spread out and rise up creating lower pressure systems

300

How would you conjugate Hablar in the second person singular in the present tense

Tu - Hablas

400

True or False : Energy conversions (changing from one form to another) can be 100% efficient under the right conditions

False: No Energy conversion is 100% efficient

400

At what temperature does water boil? (bonus points : give the temperature in each of the three major scales)

212°F

100 °C

373.15K

400

Why is the Sun at the Center of our solar system? Why do planets orbit the Sun?

It contains the most mass and therefore has the strongest gravity. The planets orbit because they have enough velocity to not get sucked in but aren't fast enough to fly away.

400

What causes wind?

Sunden changes in Air Pressure. High pressure systems move to areas of lower pressure and this movement of air drives air currents.

400

What does a conjunction do in a sentence?

Joins two phrases or clauses (and but or or)

500

Calculate the kinetic energy of an object with a mass of 2kg and a velocity of 5 m/s

KE = 1/2 m x v2

KE = 1/2 2 x 52

KE = 1/2 2 x 25

KE = 25 J

500

Convert 60°C to Kelvin

°C -> K, add (+) 273

60 + 273 = 333K

500

Describe the difference Mass and Weight

Mass is the amount of matter an object contains (same anywhere in the universe)

Weight is the force of gravity on an object (changes from planet to planet)

500

Why is the weather varied between Southern California and Northern California

*depends on quality of response

The Suns radiation heats Earth's surface unevenly (due to Earth's axis and rotation.) Some parts become hotter than others, which create convection currents and pressure systems. As these systems move and interact with one another, they bring material like air and water with them. This movement of material create the conditions for weather, like humidity wind and  precipitation.
