Provide an appropriate tone for the following passage:
The gray sky hung low over the empty playground, where the swings creaked in the cold wind. Once filled with laughter and shouts, the yard now stood silent, coated in a thin layer of frost. A lone mitten, forgotten and half-buried in the snow, lay by the slide. It seemed as if even time itself had slowed, weighed down by the heavy, quiet air. Memories of brighter days felt distant, like a dream slipping away with each fading gust of wind.

Shadows stretched and twisted down the narrow hallway, swallowing the light from her flickering flashlight. Her hands trembled, and her mind raced with desperate thoughts — she had to find a way out, and fast, before whatever was lurking in the darkness found her first.

The old oak tree still stood at the edge of the field, just as it had when we were kids. I could almost hear our laughter on the breeze — the way we used to race up its branches, daring each other to climb higher and higher. The swing Dad had tied to the thickest limb still dangled, worn and faded by years of sun and rain. Standing there now, I could almost see us again: barefoot, breathless, and filled with endless summer afternoons that seemed like they would last forever.

The papers piled up on the desk, but Alex didn’t bother to move them. The clock on the wall ticked loudly, marking the minutes as they dragged by, but he barely noticed. Shrugging, Alex leaned back in his chair and stared blankly at the ceiling, too tired to care and too bored to try.
