Figurative Language/Poetry
This is a figurative language device that compares two things using "like" or "as" (i.e. he was like a cheetah on the football field).

This is the character that has a significant change in the story, usually the main character.
What is the protagonist?
A narrative story that has fictional characters and takes place in the past.
What is historical fiction?
This is what the text is mostly about.
What is the main idea, central idea, major topic?
A group of lines in a poem.
What is a stanza?
When the author is trying to convince you of their position in a text.
What is an argument?
The story is told by one of the characters in the story. "I looked up and down the aisle at all the packages of rice. Mon will never believe me when I tell her that they are out of her favorite brand."
What is first-person perspective?
The turning point in the story, usually the point of highest tension.
What is the climax?
The moral, message, or lesson the author is trying to convey.
Visually descriptive or sensory language.
What is imagery?
The statement the author is trying to prove in a text.
What is the claim?
The attitude or feeling in a piece of writing.
What is tone?
The background information at the beginning of the story before the actual plot begins.
What is the exposition?
That which proves or disproves; that which makes plain or clear. Facts.

What is a metaphor?
Identify the claim: Grocery stores should eliminate disposable plastic bags because they are harmful to the environment. Critics claim that plastic bags only account for a small amount of waste and banning them wouldn't make that much of a difference. Plastic bags, though, are a major problem. Plastic bags never break down or disintegrate. They break into smaller pieces but they will always be in the landfill. Also, they are very hard to recycle so many people throw them away.
What is "grocery stores should eliminate plastic bags?"
What is the tone of this scene?
"That night I lay and dreamed of the hunt. The underbrush stirring. The snort of the boar, its foul mouth foaming--its tusks like scimitars."
What is "dark, spooky, scary?"
The point in the story where the problem is about to be solved and it is approaching the ending.
What is the falling action?
To conclude or guess based on evidence in the text.
What is to infer?
An exaggeration (i.e. I have seen this movie a million times!)
What is hyperbole?
Identify the claim: Students should have to pay fees in order to play high school sports because school budgets are decreasing. Schools across the country have lost money in their budgets and have eliminated some extracurricular activities. Critics argue that students who come from lower-income families might not be able to participate because of these fees. Fees, though, will allow schools to offer students the activities they want.

The character that causes the conflict in the story.
What is the antagonist?
A narrative story that usually has a lesson or a moral to it. Main characters are usually animals.
What is a fable?
The parts of a text that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning or effect. You look at this to determine background information or to determine the meaning of a word.
What is context?
