What is transcription?
DNA to mRNA
What organelle performs translation?
The ribosomes
Where is DNA stored in eukaryotic cells?
The nucleus
What part of the school is like the plasma membrane and why?
The doors, because the control what enters and exits the school.
5'-A-T-G-C-C-G-3'
3'-T-A-C-G-G-C-5' What is the mRNA?
5'-A-U-G-C-C-G-3'
Name 2 differences between mRNA and DNA.
mRNA is single stranded and DNA is double stranded. mRNA uses uracil as a nucleotide and DNA uses thymine.
Where is translation performed and why?
In the cytoplasm because that is where the ribosomes are located.
What is the exact role of DNA.
DNA provides the instructions for how to make proteins.
What part of the school is like the mitochondria and why?
3'-C-G-T-A-G-T-A-5' What is the mRNA?
5'-G-C-A-U-C-A-U-3'
Where does transcription occur in eukaryotic cells and why?
It occurs in the nucleus because that is where the DNA is located.
What molecule is read during translation?
mRNA is read during translation
What is the plasma membrane composed of and what is its function?
The plasma membrane is composed of phospholipids and controls what enters and exits the cell.
What part of the school is like the lysosomes and why?
The trash cans because that is where we get rid of things we no longer want.
5'-A-U-C-U-U-G-3' What are the two amino acids?
Ile and Leu
What is the name for 3 nucleotides in mRNA?
A codon
What are the building blocks of proteins and what is always the first one?
Amino acids and methionine.
Name the three organelles that transport proteins and/or lipids.
The smooth ER, rough ER and golgi apparatus
What part of the school is the nucleus and why?
The office because it is the control center for the school.
3'-A-G-T-5' What is the amino acid?
What are the steps of transcription up until we start translation. Include the cell location that the steps occur.
In the nucleus the DNA molecule is opened. The bottom strand is used to make the mRNA. The mRNA::DNA molecule breaks apart. The mRNA leaves the nucleus and enters the cytoplasm. In the cytoplasm the mRNA gets to the ribosomes.
What would happen if there was an error and the CCA codon was made CCC? Be specific
The wrong amino acid would be added.
What would happen if the lysosome did not function? Be specific. I will not take the "cell will die."
If the lysosomes do not function, there will be a build up of old, damaged or unwanted proteins. This will cause the cell not to function properly.
What part of a plant cell was the cafeteria?
Chloroplast because chloroplast make food for plant cells.
5'-G-T-T-A-T-G-3' What are the 2 amino acids?
Ala and Met
