What is chemistry the study of?
Matter
When two or more atoms come together it is called...
A molecule!
How do substances change phases?
By increasing kinetic energy
Define melting and provide an example
S->L
What is the definition of matter?
Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.
Is water (H2O) an atom or molecule?
Molecule!
What is temperature?
The measure of kinetic energy
Describe the arrangement, shape, movement, and attraction of gas molecules
Arrangement: far apart
Shape: no defined shape
Movement: very fast
Attraction: weak
Define freezing and provide an example
L->S
What is the most basic building block of matter?
Atoms
What are the three phases of matter?
Solids, Liquids, and Gases
Filip late to class, a cheetah, or a slug?
Describe the arrangement, shape, movement, and attraction of liquid molecules
Arrangement: fairly close together, can slide past one another
Shape: shape of container
Movement: Medium speed, flows
Attraction: fairly attracted
Define evaporation and provide an example
L->G
Where could you look to find all the types of atoms that exist in the world?
Periodic Table
What was the name of the man who came up with the periodic table?
Dmitri Mendeleev
What is conduction?
The transfer of heat (which is the transfer of kinetic energy)
Describe the arrangement, shape, movement, and attraction of molecules in a solid
Arrangement: close together, can't move past one another
Shape: defined shape
Movement: vibration
Attraction: strong
Define condensation and provide an example
G->L
What are the two main properties of matter? Not the definition of matter, but properties/characteristics!
Matter of the same type is attracted to one another and moves
How is the periodic table arranged and what does that thing mean?
By atomic number (which is the number of protons)
Can you cool something down by transferring coolness to it?
No, coolness is the absence of heat. Something becomes cool when its kinetic energy leaves it and is transferred to something else
Using the 3 class demos (metal ball expanding, food dye in water, water on wax paper) explain how matter is attracted to one another and how matter moves around on the atomic level.
Metal ball: molecules moved as kinetic energy increased from heat which made the ball expand, metal atoms also did not separate
Food dye: molecules move around which is why the food dye dispersed/mixed in easily, food dye molecules are water molecules also did not separate
Water on wax paper: water droplets could not easily break apart from one another since water molecules are attracted to one another
Define sublimation and deposition
Sublimation= S->G
Deposition= G->S
