Describe the difference between the woman's tone and the overall mood in the following passage found on the last page of "The Landlady" by Roald Dahl.

"Temple," Billy said, "Gregory Temple. Excuse my asking, but haven't there been any other guests here except them in the last two or three years?"

Holding her teacup high in one hand, inclining her head slightly to the left, she looked up at him out of the corners of her eyes and gave him another gentle little smile.

"No, my dear," she said. "Only you."

What is...the landlady's tone is calm and relaxed while the mood is tense, ominous, and uncomfortable (or other based on teacher discretion) because it reveals to the reader that the landlady's Bed & Breakfast (creepily) has only had two guests in the last 2-3 years, both who Billy seems to (kinda) remember headlines about them going missing.

Explain the literary technique used in the following example from chaper 8 in The Outsiders. *Don't just name the technique, you also need to explain!

Ponyboy is on his way home from the hospital with Two-Bit after visiting Dally & Johnny, Pony thinks to himself, "I was silent most of the way home. I was thinking about the rumble. I had a sick feeling in my stomach and it wasn't from being ill. It was the same kind of helplessness I'd felt that night Darry yelled at me for going to sleep in the lot. I had the same deathly fear that something was going to happen that none of us could stop" (127).

What is foreshadowing?

Ponyboy foreshadows the deaths of both Johnny and Dally with the line, "I had the same deathly fear that something was going to happen that none of us could stop" (127). Later, both Johnny and Dally die in ways that are out of Ponyboy's (or anyone's) control - yes, including Dally's.
