“Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold...”
Johnny- These were Johnny's dying words to Pony in which he urges Pony to keep being a good kid and not let his death change him for the worse.
“Attention, this is a reminder to male elevens that objects are not to be removed from the recreation area and that snacks are to be eaten, not hoarded.”
Announcement speaker: Jonas was publicly scolded for taking the apple from the cafeteria. He took it because he saw flashes of the color red.
If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.
Scrooge- He tells the thin and portly man that he will not donate money to the poor. If the poor don't want to be placed in prison, they would be better off dead.
“So it doesn’t do any good, the fighting and the killing. It doesn’t prove a thing. Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs.”
Randy- He tells Pony that the feud between the socials and greasers is pointless because fighting won't change how they live.
“I know that you are all concerned. That you feel I have made a mistake.”
Committee Leader: She calmed the worries of the audience during the ceremony of twelve. She intentionally skipped Jonas' name because he was chosen to be the new receiver.
I wear the chain I forged in life. I made it link by link, and yard by yard. Is its pattern strange to you? Or would you know, you, Scrooge?
Marley- He is trying to warn Scrooge of a miserable afterlife. Marley was the same as Scrooge -- he is now punished in death because of his actions when living.
“Things are rough all over.”
Cherry- She states the major theme in the novel to Pony: everyone has issues no matter where they come from or how much money they have.
“You can understand, then, that that’s what I felt for Rosemary. I loved her.”
Giver- He is trying to explain the concept of love to Jonas by telling him about his daughter Rosemary. She was the previous receiver before Jonas.
Our contract is an old one. It was made when we were both poor and content to be so. You are changed. When it was made, you were another man.
Scrooge's Fiancé- This is a painful memory for Scrooge. His fiancé broke up with him because he started to love money above all else.
“Our one rule, besides Stick together, is Don’t get caught. He might get beat up, he might not. Either way there’s not going to be any blood feud between our outfit and Shepard’s.” --- “He got caught. He pays up. No sweat.”
Two-bit: He is explaining to Cherry how greaser follow a code that involves loyalty and fairness.
“I know, I know. It hurts, little guy. But I have to use a vein, and the veins in your arms are still too teeny-weeny.”
Jonas' Father- He is releasing the smaller of the two twins. He is unware that he is comitting murder.
“Well, it’s two in the morning, kiddo. Another hour and I would have had the police out after you. Where were you, Ponyboy?”
Darry- He lost his temper when Pony showed up late after falling asleep in the lot with Johnny because he loves Pony and was worried about him.
“It’s just that… without the memories it’s all meaningless. They gave that burden to me. And to the previous Receiver. And the one before him.”
Giver- He is explaining to Jonas how important memories and history are in order to prevent the same mistakes from happening.
