What is/are: being polite, having a nice phone voice, using respectful language, problem solving, helpfulness
This is just one HARD SKILL (something a boss or coworker CAN teach or train you to do) you might need if you get a job stocking shelves at a grocery store.
What is - knowing how to life boxes on a forklift, understanding the way the aisles are organized, memorizing where things are in the store, being able to read labels and shelf tags, knowing where supplies and other tools are in the store.
Being neat, tidy and organized is THIS kind of skill.
What is - a SOFT SKILL?
If you walk in late to class, this is just ONE clue you could gather with your eyes, to help you figure out what you should be doing.
What is - looking around to see what other kids are doing, looking at the teacher to see what they are doing, looking up on the board to see if there are instructions, looking at students' desks to see what kinds of supplies they have on them; etc.
What is - be polite, be respectful, use a voice at a 1-2 level, say please and thank you, order only off the menu, etc.
This is just one SOFT SKILL (something you can't TEACH or TRAIN someone to do) you might need if you get a job delivering mail on foot in a neighborhood.
What is - having lots of energy, being friendly, being careful, being fast, being on time. . .
This is just one HARD SKILL (something a boss or coworker CAN teach or train you to do) you might need if you get a job as a barista in a coffee shop.
What is - working the espresso machine, stocking supplies, knowing the ingredients and how to make the drinks, knowing the prices of things, knowing how to work the cash register or card machine, knowing how to make change. . .
Knowing how to use a wrench to loosen a pipe fitting under a leaky sink is THIS kind of skill.
What is a HARD SKILL?
If you walk in late to class, this is just one CLUE you can gather with your ears, to know what you are supposed to be doing.
What is - listening for instructions from the teacher, listening for any kind of announcement, listening to a video or other presentation, listening to what your table partner might be saying, etc.
What is IN THE BATHROOM?
This is just one SOFT SKILL (something you can't TEACH or TRAIN someone to do) you might need if you get a job as a greeter at Fred Meyer.
What is - friendliness, being respectful, being kind, being helpful, being able to smile and be welcoming, being a "people person" - comfortable around lots of people...
This is just one HARD SKILL (something a boss or coworker CAN teach or train you to do) you might need if you get a job as a dog walker.
What is - how to train dogs, how to use leashes, harnesses and other dog supplies, knowing the neighborhoods or how to get around a city, knowing how to handle a dog on a busy street or around other people or dogs.
Having good time management and being on time is THIS kind of skill.
What is a SOFT SKILL?
This is one thing you could SAY to someone in class if you walk in late, to figure out what you are supposed to be doing.
What is - ask a peer/another student what the activity is, or what the instructions are. Ask a teacher what you are supposed to be doing.
This is how your body should look as you are moving through a crowded restaurant or coffee shop.
What is - walking, calm, hands to self, safe, etc.
This is just one SOFT SKILL (something you can't TEACH or TRAIN someone to do) you might need if you get a job bagging groceries at a grocery store.
What is - being organized, being careful, having good spacial skills, being strong, being friendly, being helpful, being respectful, good customer service skills...
This is just one HARD SKILL (something a boss or coworker CAN teach or train you to do) you might need if you get a job putting books away in a library.
What is - how to alphabetize, understanding the lay-out of the library, using library equipment (labels, carts, check-out machines/computers, etc.), using the carts and how to roll them around, etc.
Being a good problem-solver is THIS kind of skill.
What is a SOFT SKILL?
This is one way you could handle it, if you spaced out for 5 minutes, and suddenly look around and the class is working quietly.
This is something you could order if you only have $3 when you go to a coffee shop, out of these choices: coffee cake, $5; mocha, $6; cookie, $2.50; cake pop, $3.25.
What is - a COOKIE?
This is just one SOFT SKILL (something you can't TEACH or TRAIN someone to do) you might need if you get a job as a camp counselor at a summer camp for little kids.
This is just one HARD SKILL (something a boss or coworker CAN teach or train you to do) you might need if you get a job cleaning houses.
What is - knowing about cleaning products and how to buy and use them; knowing how to drive, so you can carry cleaning supplies around town and to and from houses; knowing how to bill people and manage money; etc.
Being able to use all the settings on a blender, in your new job at the juice bar, is THIS kind of skill.
What is a HARD SKILL?
You slept in and got dropped at school late. When you walk into art class, students are working in table groups on a project in the middle of their tables. This is how you could handle this.
What is - ask the teacher which group you should be in, sit at your table and ask a peer what they are doing, look around and see where your group is, and join it - ask what your job is, etc. . .
THIS REQUIRES A DEMONSTRATION WITH YOUR BODY! This is YOU, demonstrating walking to the corner and being safe before crossing the street to the next corner.
