What are cells?

Cells are the basic building blocks of life that make up all living organisms.

100

What is the circulatory system?

Moves blood, oxygen and nutrients around the body

100

What are the 4 key organs found in the respiratory system?

25 points for each identified.

Lungs, Trachea, Bronchi, Diaphragm

100

What are the causes of asthma?

Genetics, Exercise, Allergens (pollen, dust mites) and environmental factors.

100

What is a trend in data?

A trend in data is an increase or decrease over time.

200

What are the structures in a cell called?

Organelles

200

Why does the heart have valves?

The heart has valves to keep blood flow in one direction.

200

The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body and removes the carbon dioxide.

Identify the question that was asked to get this response.

What is the respiratory system?

200

What is tar?

Tar is the sticky substance that coats the inside of the lungs.

200

What is a relationship in data?

Relationships in data are when 2 seperate pieces of data effect each other.

300

What is the difference between plant and animal cells (name the organelles found in each one)

Plant cells have a rigid cell wall, chloroplasts and a large vacuole while animals cells lack these structures. Animal cells have a cell membrane, no chloroplasts, and multiple small vacuoles rather than one large one.

300

Name the 3 types of blood vessels in the circulatory system.

100 points for each vessel named.

Arteries (100 points)

Veins (100 points)

Capillaries (100 points)

Fill in the blanks: When you breathe in your lungs are filled with ______, when you exhale ______ is breathed out.

1. Air/Oxygen

2. Carbon dioxide

300

How does smoking impact the process of the respiratory system?

Smoking impacts the respiratory system by the build up tar that enters the airways and coats the trachea and lungs with celia.

300

Is there a relationship between the increase in global temperature and the decreasing of glaciers and ice caps due to them melting?

Yes, As global temperature increase, ice caps and glaciers have drastically decreased due to global warming.

400

Why do plant cells contain chloroplast?

Plant cells contain chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll so they can absorb sunlight to do photosynthesis.

400

Why is the left ventricle thicker than the right ventricle?

The left ventricle is thicker because it needs more force to pump blood to the whole body.

400

Draw a flow chart to demonstrate where the air travels in the respiratory system.

Nose/Mouth —> Trachea —> Bronchi —> Bronchioles —> Alveoli

400

How does inflammation of the airways affect asthma?

Inflammation of the airways causes asthma symptoms (wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing) by restricting or limiting the airflow to and from the lungs.

It does this by causing:

  • swelling of the airways, making them narrower
  • tightening of the muscles that surround the airways which makes them even narrower
  • the production of too much mucus, which can plug up or block the airways

Create a graph with an increasing trend.

Must include all features of a graph.

Teacher approval

500

What is the function of the sperm cell and what 3 structures help it perform its function?

200 points for the function

100 points for each structure names

The function of the sperm cell is to fertilise the female egg. (200 points)

The tail helps the sperm swim and reach the egg. (100 points)

The body which contains mitochondria allows the cell to move. (100 points)

The head of the sperm contains the genetic material (nucleus). (100 points)

500

Why do arteries have thick elastic walls?

Arteries have thick elastic walls for strength to prevent rupturing and push the blood effectively.

500

The function of the Alveoli is to allow gas exchange.

What structures of the Alveoli help it perform its function?

Thin walls (diffusion pathway), Capillaries (gas transport), Elastic fibres (expand and contract during inhalation and exhalation)

500

If the longer a person smokes cigarettes, how will it impact their breathing?

If the longer a person smokes then they are unable to expel air properly because the lungs become inflamed and the diaphragm loses muscle, making it difficult to release air properly.

500

Create 1/2 graphs that contains a clear relationship.

Must contain all features of a graph.

E.g. increasing exercise period and increasing heart rate.
