The story is set at Monkswell Manor, a newly opened guesthouse run by a young couple, Mollie and Giles Ralston. A heavy snowstorm traps the owners and their five eccentric guests inside the manor: Christopher Wren, Mrs. Boyle, Major Metcalf, Miss Casewell, and Mr. Paravicini. The tension rises when the police announce that a murderer is on the loose — and could be heading their way. Soon after, a police detective, Sergeant Trotter, arrives on skis to warn the household and investigate. When Major Metcalf is murdered inside Monkswell Manor, panic sets in. Everyone is a suspect, and old secrets begin to surface. Each character seems to be hiding something, and trust erodes as the detective works to expose the killer.

The play centers on Nora Helmer who is married to Torvald Helmer. At first, their life appears comfortable, but beneath the surface lies a secret: years earlier, Nora secretly borrowed money to save Torvald’s life, forging her father’s signature to do so. As the play unfolds, Nils Krogstad, the man who loaned her the money, threatens to expose her unless Torvald allows him to keep his job at the bank. When the truth comes out, Torvald is not grateful for Nora’s sacrifice. Instead, he lashes out, caring more about his reputation than her loyalty. Once the threat of blackmail disappears, Torvald forgives Nora, but by then she sees their marriage for what it is: a façade in which she has been treated like a “doll” rather than a real partner. In the ending, Nora makes the decision to stay with Torvald and her children in order to make sure her children have a good childhood.

The play begins when Reverend Parris discovers a group of girls, including his niece Abigail Williams, singing in an old abandoned cottage. Fearing punishment, the girls pretend they were bewitched and begin accusing others of witchcraft. Their lies spark hysteria in Salem. John Proctor, a farmer, is revealed to have had an affair with Abigail. She still desires him, and part of her motivation in the trials is to remove his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. As accusations spread, respected citizens like Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey are arrested. The court, led by Judge Danforth, relies on spectral evidence and pressures people to confess, even if they are innocent. John Proctor tries to expose Abigail’s fraud, but his reputation and integrity are tested. When Elizabeth is accused, he fights to save her but is ultimately accused himself. In the climax, Proctor chooses to preserve his honor rather than sign a false confession of witchcraft. He goes to the gallows, dying a martyr for truth and integrity, while the hysteria continues to tear Salem apart.

Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone (written around 623 BCE) is part of his Theban plays, following the aftermath of the civil war between Oedipus’ two sons, Eteocles and Polynices. Both brothers kill each other in battle over Thebes’ throne. Creon, the new king, decrees that Eteocles will be honored with burial while Polynices, seen as a traitor, will be left unburied. Antigone, their sister, defies Creon’s law. Believing divine law is higher than human law, she buries Polynices in secret. When Creon discovers her actions, he condemns her to death despite pleas from his son Haemon and warnings from the prophet Tiresias. Tragedy unfolds when Creon finally reconsiders, but too late: Antigone has already taken her own life. Haemon, devastated, kills himself beside her. Creon’s wife, Eurydice, also takes her life after hearing of her son’s death. By the end, Creon is left broken and alone, realizing that his stubbornness and pride have destroyed his family.
