What is a unit rate?

A unit rate is a ratio with a denominator of 1, representing an amount for every 1 unit of something else.

100

What is a proportional relationship?

A relationship where the ratio between any two quantities is always the same.

100

What is the equation for constant of proportionality?

y = kx

If you had a relative or friend who was about to start module 4, and they asked you to tell them as much as you can about it, what would you say?

ALL ANSWERS ARE RIGHT!

100

What can you do to prepare for the module test and the segment exam?

Review my assessments, lessons and notes.  Set up a tutoring session with my teacher for lessons I need help with, or attend live tutoring and review the help resources.

Explain how to solve this complex fraction:

1/2  divided by 3/5

You would use the multiplicative inverse

and multiply 1/2 by the reciprocal of 3/5 which is 5/3

so 1/2 * 5/3   = 1*5 /2*3    =  5/6

200

What re characteristics of graphs of proportional relationships?

A straight line

Passes through the origin

A point on the graph is (1,r) where r is the unit rate.

200

in the equation y =kx, what does the k represent?

the constant of proportionality, or unit rate.

Mark guessed that he would see 36 gorillas, and he actually saw 28 gorillas. What is the percent of error in Mark's guess? Round your final answer to the nearest whole number.

36 − 28 = 8

Calculate the difference between the guess and the actual count.

8/28

Write the amount of error in the numerator and the actual number in the denominator.

8/28≈0.2857  ~ 29%

If you purchased 6 apples for $3. What is the unit cost per Apple?

$3/6 = 0.50 or 50 cents per apple.

Ellen's family is purchasing their admission tickets for the zoo. Adult tickets are $15 each, and children's tickets are $9 each.  Make a table of values to show the cost of children's tickets, for 1 2, 3, and 4 children.

1                  9

2                18

3                 27

4                36

Explain how you can determine if this table shows a proportional relationship?

x                        y

5                       4

10                     8

15                    12

Yes, the graph shows a proportional relationship because for each pair (x,y)

the value of k is the same.  K = y/x

4/5 = 8/10 = 12/15   = 0.8

Angela guessed that she would see 6 lions and she actually saw 4 lions. What was the percent of error in Angela's guess? Round your final answer to the nearest whole number.

|(6−4)/4|=2/4

Write the amount of error in the numerator and the actual number in the denominator.

2/4=0.5  * 100 = 50%

Angela's percent of error was 50%.

Which is the best deal? Explain your answer choice.

A 7.5 ounce bag of chips for $2.49  or  a 9.25 ounce bag of chips for $3.29?

take the prices and divide by the ounces for each.  Work:  3.29 / 9.25 = 0.355 or $0.36 cents per ounce

2.49 / 7.5 = 0.332  or $0.33 cents per ounce, so the best deal is the 7.5 ounce for $2.49 because it has the lowest cost per ounce.

Car A travels 50 miles using 2 gallons of gas.

Car B travels 100 miles using 4 gallons of gas.

Are the ratios proportional?

You can find the unit rate for each car. If the unit rates are the same then they are proportional. 100 miles/ 4 gallons = 25 mi/ gal.  And 50 miles/2 gallons = 25 mi/ gal.  The unit rates are the same so the relationship is proportional.

On a visit to the zoo, the parents walked 1/4 of the entire boardwalk, in 6 minutes. At this rate, how long will it take the parents to get to the end of the boardwalk?

we could use complex fractions and find that 6min/1/4 boardwalk  = 6 x 4/1 =

6/1 * 4/1  = 24 minutes.

A souvenir normally sells for $18.00, but the price is $13.50 today. What is the percent of decrease in the price?

|(18.00−13.50)/18.00|=4.50/18.00

Write the difference in the numerator and the original price in the denominator.

4.50/18.00=0.25 = 25% decrease

The family is on their way to the zoo, but first, they have to stop and fill the tank with gas. The gas pump dispensed 1/2 gallon in 10 seconds.

What is the unit rate in gallons per minute?

Since 60 seconds = 1 min.  You could multiply the top and bottom by 6, to make the denominator = 60 seconds or 1 minute.

1/2 * 6 = 3 gallons

10 secs * 6 = 60 seconds = 1 min

  so 3gal/1 min
