Criminal Case Burden of Proof:
The government (prosecution) holds the burden, the standard is beyond a reasonable doubt.
Civil Burden of Proof:
The person filing the suit (plaintiff) holds the burden. And must show a claim is more likely true than not true

Because criminal law is meant to punish blameworthy acts and if your forced to do something why would you get in trouble.
