These are the natural resources of each of the three sections (New England, Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies), and how it affected the development of each.
What is New England had shallow rocky soil, little flat farmland, and short growing seasons, so they turned to fishing and ship building. The Middle Colonies had longer growing seasons, richer soil, and plenty of flat farm land, so they grew wheat, oats, corn, and became America's "Bread Basket." They also had many navigable rivers which aided their development. The Southern Colonies had long growing seasons, rich soil, and plenty of flat farmland. This led them to grow cash crops like cotton, rice, and indigo.
