Explain the definition of theme and how theme drove the plot of the story in "The Landlady".
Theme - message / lesson of the story. In "The Landlady", the theme was "appearance is not always reality". This drove the plot of the story because Billy believed that the landlady was a sweet and nice old woman based on her appearances and actions; when in reality she was a murderer who kept bodies of young men in her bed and breakfast.

Discuss how foreshadowing is used in any text that we have read this year. Make sure to define the term foreshadowing.
Foreshadowing are hints in the text to provide information to the reader that something is about to happen. Ex: "The Landlady" - when Billy looks at the Bed and Breakfast sign and says that each word was like a large, black eye staring at him.

Mood - reader's feelings while reading a text Tone - author's intended feelings from a text Ex: Reader's mood from "Landlady" could be eerie based on the comments from the narrator. At times, the tone of the text was suspicious because the of the dramatic irony, Billy was suspicious about what the Landlady was up to, but the reader already knew Billy was going to end up like the other two boys in the story.

Verbal Irony - when a speaker makes a statement, but means something else. Dramatic Irony - when something happens in the story that the readers are aware of, but the characters are not. Situational Irony - when an action is expected to occur, but the reversal of the expectation occurs.
