What is the difference between a Scientific Law and a Scientific Theory?

Both are scientific knowledge based on observations that have been repeatedly tested and shown to be true over time. Laws do not explain or tell why something is the way it is, they simply describe a pattern in nature; however, Theories attempt to explain how or why something functions the way it does. Both are subject to change if new discoveries/technologies are made.

A bird species feeds on the seeds of a particular tree. A long drought causes the outer covering of the seeds to become thicker and harder to crack. After many generations, what will be the most likely change on the birds in this population?

They would adapt to eating the thicker seeds by evolving thicker, bigger or stronger beaks.
