Dogs, especially sniffer dogs, have a far better sense of smell than humans because their smell receptors are much longer than those in human noses. Human noses differ from person to person, but they can affect the way a person tastes food. Sniffer dogs locate substances with their powerful noses and can detect even small amounts of substances they are trained to target for. The sniffer dog then gives a signal to handlers to indicate they have detected the substance. Signals can include pawing or sitting.

Passage 1

The downtown Seattle Cineplex was built in 1987. It has five theaters with stadium-style seating. Each of the theaters makes use of the latest digital projection techniques. The screens are large and slightly curved to give audiences a panoramic view. In addition, the seats are cushioned and offer ample leg-room. Special seats toward the back of the theater cater to patrons in wheelchairs.

Passage 2

The Neptune Theater hasn’t changed a bit since it opened in 1905. Some of the colorful murals have faded a bit, but the theater’s domed ceiling is every bit as majestic as it was in the old days.      When planning the layout of your new home, be sure to make at least one room a “distraction-free zone.” This is a place where people can gather and talk to one another without competing with the noise of televisions, telephones, or radios. It does not have to be the same room for everyone. For some people, this zone is the dining room. For others, it is the kitchen. Not only does a distraction-free zone provide peace and quiet after a busy day, but it also promotes communication between you and your family. Communication is so important to a healthy family, so the importance of a distraction-free zone cannot be overstated.

Read the last sentence of the passage. The author wants readers to know that

 A. a family should gather and talk in only one room.
B. a distraction-free zone is healthy for families.
 C. a family should never let themselves become distracted.
 D. a distraction-free zone is an unnecessary precaution.

(1)   One of the chief causes of the American Civil War was slavery. Southern states depended on slavery to support their agricultural economy. Only a small proportion of Northerners actively opposed slavery. However, they were opposed to its expansion, in part because they did not want to compete against slave labor. The main debate centered on whether slavery should be permitted in the Western territories recently acquired during the Mexican War (1846-1848).

(2)   Looking backward, anyone must marvel at the fact that the American Civil War lasted four years. All the advantages seemed to favor the North. The Union had a population more than double that of the Confederacy. It had most of the factories and railroads, and a merchant marine. The South, on the other hand, was a region of farms. However, the South had two important advantages. First, it did not need to conquer the North: It could simply defend its soil and wait for the North to become discouraged. Second, the South could operate with shorter interior battle lines, thus making better use of its men. In the long run, the North's supplies and men helped decide the outcome of the war.

 A. They both offer an analysis of the Civil War.

Scientists remind people repeatedly- DO NOT FEED BEARS. Why is this so important? Bears that are fed become comfortable being around humans and are more likely to damage property or injure someone. When bears become comfortable around humans, they are often eventually destroyed when they are in search of food and approach a person who is frightened by the bear. They are also more likely to cause a vehicle accident, which can cause injury (or death) to the bear and the humans involved. Humans can help protect bears simply by remembering not to feed them.

Most people want to think that they are in control of their pets. However, a study by Karen McComb at the University of Sussex found that cat owners are controlled by their cats. Cat owners probably won’t have too much trouble believing this. Cats make a fairly loud noise by mixing a purr with a cry. The sound seems to be less annoying to humans than straight meowing. Using this sound, cats tell humans when they want to eat and when they want the door opened. The purr part of the sound keeps humans from becoming too annoyed, so the cat gets exactly what he or she wants.

What is the main idea presented in this paragraph?

 A. Cats are smarter than humans.
 B. Humans control their cats.
 C. Cats control their owners.
 D. Cats like to purr and meow.

C. Cats control their owners.
