Define Whole and Part Practice

Whole Practice is when a skill is taught in it's entirety without being broken down, whereas Part practice is when a skill is broken down into smaller sections

100

Define Gross and Fine Skills

Gross skills are skills that use large muscle groups to perform, whereas Fine skills use small muscle groups and are very precise
100

Define practice

Practice is repetition of a skill to improve/maintain proficiency

100

Provide 3 examples of a Gross skill

Running, Tackling, Kicking

100

Which type of skill would benefit most from part practice?

Serial skills

200

Define Massed and Distributed Practice

Massed practice is when a skill is trained continuously without breaks, whereas Distributed practice is when a skill is trained with breaks allowing for mental rehearsal or feedback

200

Define Open and Closed Skills

Open skills are skills that are affected by the surroundings, whereas Closed skills are not affected by the surroundings and performed in the same conditions each time

200

Explain how the learner may influence practice

- Skill, Stage of learning, age, gender, ability, and cognitive processes

The learners age and the skill may need to be considered when teaching a new skill as the learner's age will impact their ability to produce the movement and the complexity of the skill may not be suitable for the learner

200

Provide 3 examples of a continuous skill

Running, Swimming, Cycling

200

Which type of skill would benefit most from whole practice?

Continuous skills

300

Explain Whole-Part-Whole Practice and it's benefits

Whole-Part-Whole practice is when a skill is trained in it's entirety, and then broken down into different elements before being trained all together again. It is beneficial because it allows the coach to identify areas of the skill that the learner struggles with and train that specific part.

300

Define Discrete, Continuous, and Serial skills

Discrete skills have a distinct start and finish, Continuous skills combine movements together in a repetitive motion with no clear start and finish, and Serial skills link different skills together to create a sequence of movements

300

Explain how the coach may influence practice

- Range of preferences, knowledge, beliefs and strategies

E.g. During practice we may need to consider the coaches coaching style and beliefs as it will impact the type of practice that the coach is comfortable using

300

Provide 3 examples of an open skill

Passing, Shooting, Dribbling

300

What type of learner would benefit most from progressive part practice?

A beginner to a skill

400

Explain Progressive Part practice and it's benefits

Progressive Part practice is when a skill is taught in different sections sequentially to lead up to the whole skill. It is beneficial because it allows the learner to achieve success at every section of the skill.

400

A single skill can be multiple types of skills (TRUE OR FALSE). Provide an example

False.

Running is both a continuous skill and a Gross skill

400

Explain how the environment influence practice

- Physical environment, size of group, equipment, weather

The situation in which the skill is practiced will influence the effectiveness of practice e.g. If the group is large but there is only 1 ball to practice the training session will not be very effective

400

Provide an example of a serial skill and explain why it is a serial skill

E.g Gymnastics routine is a serial skill because it is a series of different movements pieced together

400

What type of learner would benefit most from whole practice?

Experienced learners
500

Explain Modified Games and Sports, and provide an example

Modified Games and Sports introduces a sport and it's skills to learners by changing the rules of the sport to suit the ability level of the learners . An example of a Modified Game is Newcombe Ball to introduce Volleyball.

500

Provide a Sports example of each skill type:

Gross

Fine

Open

Closed

Discrete

Continuous

Serial

Gross - Dunk in Basketball

Fine - Throwing Dart

Open - Pass in Soccer

Closed - Somersault in Diving

Discrete - Batting in Cricket

Continuous - Freestyle Swimming

Serial - Boxing Combination

500

Explain how Safety influences practice

- Cooldowns, Warmup, Supervision, Protective equipment

Ensuring learners are safe during training allows for productive training sessions without injuries. e.g. With the appropriate equipment in hockey you can practice defensive drills without worrying too much about injuries

500

List all the types of skills

Gross

Fine

Open

Closed

Discrete

Serial

Continuous

500

What type of practice would be most beneficial for children and explain why?

Modified games and sports because they are highly engaging activities
