Explain why leaves change color in the fall.

A layer of cork cells grows between the stem and twig.  This blocks the flow of water and minerals into the leaf.  The leaf stops making new chlorophyll.  Slowly, the yellow and orange pigments begin to show.  Red color happens as a result of sun striking the leaf and causing leftover sugar to be made into red pigment.
