They are used to transfer liquids or solid materials and typically operate at speeds up to 700 rpm, providing approximately 5,000 cfm airflow at high vacuum levels. They have a single, multi-blade impeller mounted eccentrically inside a casing partially filled with a service liquid (typically water). The pump casing has both a suction and a discharge port.
What is Liquid Ring Vacuum Pump.
300
Pre-Job Set-Up: A ____ ______ _________ and tailgate safety meeting is required prior to starting any phase of the job. The job supervisor or crew leader and all members of the vacuum crew must sign the it. A new one is required at the beginning of each day or shift or any time that there is a change of scope to the work. Failure to comply with the Veolia policy will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
What is Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
300
During All Vacuum Operations: Never move a vehicle without the boom _________ properly, if so equipped.
What is secured.
300
Liquid Vacuum Operations: When vacuuming in a ________ loop system (the hose from the vacuum truck is connected directly to a source) a double block and bleed will be utilized. Breaking this connection will be treated as a first line break. The use of a face shield, rubber gloves & slicker suit or full length rain coat is mandatory.
What is closed.
300
AirMover Operations: The technician at the end of the hose must be in control of the ___________ or other device that will activate the safety tee.
What is lanyard.
400
They normally use a sliding vane pump with high vacuum (28 inches of mercury [Hg]) and lower air flow up to 1,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm). They are used to vacuum liquid and sludge, including certain hydrocarbons. Material is mainly moved by vacuum where it is pulled into the debris body. It normally uses a filter screen or a moisture trap as a filtration system for the vacuum pump. It typically does not have either a cyclone separator or a baghouse with filter bags. The size of the debris body is normally measured in gallons or barrels. The standard is 1,500 – 3,000 gallons (35 – 70 barrels).
What is Liquid Vacuum Truck.
400
Pre-Job Set-Up: During vacuum operations the operator shall be within _____ feet of the vacuum truck at all times, to ensure timely actions as appropriate.
What is 35.
400
During All Vacuum Operations: Be sure the truck is on level solid ground when ____________ material.
What is off-loading.
400
Liquid Vacuum Operations: Lockout/Tagout Policy for Liquid Vacuum Truck Tanks - All vacuum truck tanks must be ____________ emptied of contents and decontaminated after each use prior to leaving the tank/truck unattended or using it to vacuum potentially noncompatible material. If this is not possible, you must complete an “Equipment Out Of Service” tag and attach it to the vehicle’s steering wheel or on the trailer hitch in the case of a 130 bbl trailer without a truck. On the tag you must list the date, the source, and a description of the material in the tank.
What is immediately.
400
AirMover Operations: The use of _____________ (i.e. ADS type) hose at any length is allowed as long as the material being vacuumed is not considered flammable or combustible. ALWAYS REFERENCE THE SAFETY DATA SHEET. The ADS hose shall be secured to minimize the hazard of the recoiling effect associated with its design. Hose end protectors/wands and a properly installed vacuum break is required (except for vacuuming liquids and sludges) when using ADS hose. The vacuum breaker is to be controlled by the employee operating the vacuum hose or an attendant within line of sight. In either case, a lanyard no longer than 35 feet in length will be used.
What is non-conductive.

These are often referred to as wet/dry trucks. Sometimes people refer to them simply as vac trucks but, typically this term refers to a liquid vacuum unit and not one of these. It can effectively be used for dry material, sludge and liquids. They cannot be used for materials that are too large to fit through the hose or vacuuming hydrocarbon material with a low flash point, such as gasoline. They normally use a positive displacement pump rated for both vacuum and air flow. The typical one in today’s workplace has a high vacuum pump rated at 27 or 28 inches of mercury and free air flow ratings of 4,000 – 6,000 cfm. They use both vacuum and air flow to convey the material. Vacuum is used to overcome the resistance to air flow caused by long tubing runs or high loading rates, whereas air flow is what carries the material through the hose, thus the origin of its name. Understanding air flow and the air path is essential to understanding how it operates. The size of the debris body on one is typically measured in cubic yards; the standard is 16 – 18 cubic yards.
What is Air Mover.
500
Pre-Job Set-Up: _____________ hearing protection (i.e. Plugs and Muffs) shall be worn within 20’ of an Air Mover in operation. Additional PPE may be required based on customer requirements or job specifications.

Safety Requirements for AirMover Operations: Any hoses used for pressurized off-loading are required to be pressure tested annually and banded with the date for the next __________ test (See Hose Testing Policy).
What is required.
500
Liquid Vacuum Operations: Preventing Air Entrainment: (Where applicable) (Reference API 2219): During loading, if the hose or suction nozzle is not completely submerged in the liquid, or not directly connected to the source container below the liquid level, air is introduced into the product stream. Depending on the flow rate and the hose diameter, the product may atomize, become suspended in the airflow and not be deposited in the vacuum tank. When this occurs, the vacuum level inside the truck decreases and large amounts of vapor and air are exhausted into the atmosphere.Vacuum truck operators shall follow safe operating procedures to prevent or minimize the amount of air introduced into the vacuum truck cargo tank during transfer from source containers. This is particularly important during the end of product transfer operations when the suction nozzle or the end of the hose may not be completely ______________ in the liquid.
What is submerged.
500
AirMover Operations: Vacuuming ______________ Dust: Each vacuum job where a potential combustible dust hazard exists, requires a job specific safety plan that adequately addresses all hazards of the job. Some common concerns to be addressed are explosion, reaction, pyrophoric properties, potential vapor releases, etc. In some cases water can be used to help mitigate hazards, but some dusts will react violently with water, make sure to consult the SDS, safety department, customer contact and/or supervision, etc. for safety information on all materials. Venting, such as unlatching top covers and bag-house doors can help alleviate the explosion hazard.
What is Combustible.
