What should you do if you receive an online report for a stolen car but the informant is not the RO?
1. If it is reasonably clear that the registered owner is a direct family member e.g.mother/father/child/husband/wife and had permission to use the vehicle or uses within a working relationship capacity, continue with the report as an Unlawful Taking
2. If there is NO clear link between the informant and the registered owner and it appears the informant is likely to have no authority to report the vehicle stolen:
• send an email using the ‘Not Registered Owner’ email template (below) from Whispir
• Add a 7 day Information Only alert, outlining the person's attempt to report this particular vehicle as stolen
• Update NIA Narrative (create ‘New’) with the ‘Not Registered Owner’ narrative template (below)
• The report should still be processed using the relevant offence code (4211, 4213 etc)
