Sentence Types
These two types of sentences have been discussed recently in class.
What are simple and compound sentences?
This ending is added to a verb to make a present participle.
What is "ing?"
An appositive is a word or phrase....
that provides more information about a noun a sentence to clarify or define it.
Verbal phrases are phrases where VERBS act as another form of speech. These types of words are often replaced by verbal phrases.
What are nouns, adjectives, or adverbs?
Adverb clauses are called this type of clause because they cannot stand on their own.
What is a dependent clause?
A simple sentence contains one of these.
What is an independent clause?
Also accept: What is a subject, a verb and a predicate?
These endings are added to a verb to make a past participle.

This type of punctuation is used around an appositive phrase.

A compound sentence needs at least this many simple sentences (or independent clauses)

What is a noun?
If an appositive is removed from a sentence....
The sentence will still make sense.
This type of verbal phrase always ends in "ing" and cannot be removed from a sentence.
What is a gerund or gerund phrase?
An adverb clause will always begin with this type of conjunction.
What is a subordinate (or subordinating) conjunction?
This type of conjunction connects two simple sentences (or independent clauses) to make a compound sentence.

Identify the past participle.
Joseph threw the burnt toast in the bin.

Joseph threw the toast in the bin still makes sense.
"I went to Rachel's, the restaurant around the corner, because I like their service."
Identify the appositive.

This type of verbal phrase begins with the word "to" and contains the simplest form of a verb.
What is an infinitive or an infinitive phrase?
If an adverb clause begins the sentence, the clause will end with this type of punctuation.
A comma.
"If Sam calls, please tell him I will be late."
This acronym is used to help remember the coordinating conjunctions in a compound sentence.
What is FANBOYS?
Identify the present participle in the sentence.
The cat is sleeping in the corner.

The cat is in the corner still makes sense.
"Tonka, the family's beloved bull terrier, had eight puppies."
Identify the appositive.

This type of verbal phrase begins with a small word that shows location, time, or direction and ends with a noun.
What is a prepositional phrase?
If an adverb clause comes at the end of a sentence, it will end with this.
A period.
"John went home after he finished his lunch."
