University of Wisconsin

(I would also take garbage university)

22-24 months

100

What was the age range of the children in experiment 2?

28-30 months

100

What was the age range of the children in experiment 3?

28-30 months

Is a cowbird a type of cow or bird?

Bird

200

What does "SNR" refer to?

signal-to-noise ratio

200

How many children were apart of Experiment 1?

40

200

How many children were apart of Experiment 2?

40

200

How many children were apart of Experiment 3?

26

Where do cowbirds lay their eggs?

Other birds' nests

#savage

What was the purpose of these experiments?

The purpose of these experiments is to see whether toddlers are able to learn novel words in the presence of background speech.

300

What was the purpose of Experiment 1?

To determine if toddlers (22-24 months old) are able to learn novel words in the presence of background speech of two intensities (5 dB SNR and 10 dB SNR).

300

What was the purpose of Experiment 2?

To determine if older toddlers (28-30 months old) are able to learn novel words in the presence of background speech of two intensities (5 dB SNR and 10 dB SNR).

300

What was the purpose of Experiment 3?

To determine if toddlers (28-30 months old) that are exposed to novel words in fluent speech (without background noise) prior to labeling are able to ameliorate the negative effects of background speech (tested in 5 dB SNR and 10 dB SNR).

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology... which geographic region are you most likely to find the cowbird?

North America

(I would also accept the ANEx lab space)

400

What background speech was used during both experiment 1 and 2?

two talker babble

400

What were the results of Experiment 1?

Mean proportion of looks at the object over time was greater in the 10 dB SNR group, compared to the 5 dB SNR group.

400

What were the results of Experiment 2?

Mean proportion of looks at the object over time was greater in the 10 dB SNR group, compared to the 5 dB SNR group.

400

What were the results of Experiment 3?

The toddlers showed an increased looking time for familiarized words but not unfamiliarized words.

400

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology... what is another name for the cowbird?

Molothrus ater

500

What type of words were used during all experiments?

Novel words

500

What do the results from experiment 1 imply?

Toddlers only showed evidence of word learning when the background noise was quieter (10 dB SNR versus 5 dB SNR).

500

What do the results of experiment 2 imply?

Age/ increase of vocabulary size (within a 6-month range) does not seem to have an effect on word-learning in noise.

500

What was done differently in experiment 3 compared to experiment 1 and 2?

During the auditory familiarization phase for experiment 3, toddlers were in a noise-free environment, compared to the two-talker background speech in experiments 1 and 2.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology...what family does the cowbird belong to?

Icteridae
