black slaves wanted to escape America because of the slave laws there. Canada was an optimal place to escape because Canada had banned slavery.

what was the underground railroad?


The underground railroad was a system of trails and safe houses. slaves could use these trails to escape America into Canada where they could be free. the punishment for escaping slaves was death. So to keep the underground railroad metaphorically underground, slaves would refer to it as if they were talking about train tracks or trains. it was a sort of secret language.

most immigrants would settle in  New France or West Ontario

many Irish people tried to escape the potato famine by stowing away on lumber ships. These ships were nicknamed coffin ships because of the high death rate of the Irish on board.  lumber ships were not made from human passengers, so there was not much space for the people. So many people had to fit in one small room which did not have enough room, food, water, light, or air.

Canada did have slavery primarily in the colony of New France until 1834. in 1834 the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect through the British Empire. slavery was abolished in America after the Civil War in 1865

The potato famine was a disease in 1846, that annihilated almost all of the Irish potato crops. which forced the Irish people into poverty hunger and, disease.

many Irish escaping from Ireland were forced to work in lumber camps, and at shipping docks, to support their families. many imagins worked in labor jobs. but british loyalists were granted land and a certain amount of money if they left Amarcrine after the Civil War and the Amarcrine revelation.
