She lived in New York City in a community that housed a lot of minorities, with mostly black and Puerto Rican neighbors. She often hosted open houses in her apartment with the Freedom riders, a group of civil rights activists that rode buses across the country into segregated areas, and offered a place to sleep to community activists.
