What is reinforcement?
A student cries after being told they cannot have the iPad. Staff give them the iPad, and the crying stops.

A student screams after being told to start math. Staff remove the worksheet. In this example, the screaming is this part of the ABC.
What is the behavior?
A student completes their work and earns 5 minutes with a preferred toy. The student begins completing work more often. This is an example of what?

What is positive reinforcement?
During group instruction, a student repeatedly makes loud noises. Each time, staff look at the student, talk to them, or redirect them. The behavior continues to happen during times when staff are interacting with other students.
What is attention?
This is what happens immediately after a behavior occurs.
What is a consequence?
A student appropriately asks for a break during difficult work. Staff provide a 3-minute break, and the student begins asking for breaks more often. What type of reinforcement occurred?

What is negative reinforcement?
A student engages in repetitive humming and hand movements during class, recess, preferred activities, and when sitting alone. The behavior continues even when staff do not respond and no demands are present.
What is sensory/automatic reinforcement?
A teacher says, "Time to clean up," and the student throw the toy. In this example, "Time to clean up" is this part of the ABC.
What is the antecedent?
A student earns tokens for completing tasks and following expectations. After earning a set number of tokens, the student exchanges them for a preferred item or activity. What type of reinforcement system is this?
What is a token economy system?
A student engages in hand biting during independent work, while waiting for preferred items, during staff attention, and when alone. The behavior occurs at similar rates across all of these situations and continues even when staff do not respond.
What is sensory/automatic reinforcement?
A student is working quietly when the teacher announces that computer time is over and directs the class to begin writing. The student pushes the Chromebook away, puts their head down, and says, “I’m not doing this.” The teacher then gives the student additional time before starting the assignment.
