What is behavior?
Anything a person does that we can see or hear
What does ABC stand for in terms of behavior?
Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence
Why is understanding the function of a behavior important?
It guides appropriate interventions to replace problem behaviors.
A= Susie opens her lunch and says "ew"
B= Susie dumps her lunch on the floor
C= Susie's teacher cleans it up and helps her get pizza
YES! Susie did not want to eat her lunch from home. Now she knows this will work next time.
How would you respond if: A student asks you for a preferred item and then throws themselves on the ground screaming when you say no?
The correct response is to not give in to the tantrum. You can help them request appropriately, remind them how they can earn that item, or wait the tantrum out.
Give one example of a behavior
Raising a hand
Saying hi
Finishing a worksheet
Sitting in chair
Touching nose
What is an antecedent?
When a student takes a break every day during math, what is the likely function of the behavior?
Escape
A- when transitioning back to class Charlie threw himself on the floor
B- Flopping to the floor
C- the para stood next to him for 30 seconds with no interaction until Charlie stood up on his own
No! The para did the right thing and did not reinforce the behavior.
How would you respond if: a student pulls their pants down to communicate they have to go to the bathroom?
Pull their pants back up and have them communicate in some way that they need the bathroom. We do not want to teach that pulling your pants down is an appropriate way to communicate bathroom.
Fill-in the blanks:
Behavior that works gets ____
Behavior that doesn't work ____ _____
repeated, fades away
What is a consequence?
What happened right after a behavior?
When a student is repeating the same verbal phrase over and over with no context, what is the function of the behavior?
Automatic
A- The teacher tells Doug it is time to do math
B- Doug runs out of the classroom
C- The para offers to take him for a walk
Yes! Doug ran out of the classroom because he was trying to escape math.
How would you respond if: a student is told he cannot have something so he begins screaming. You know in the past that if you do not react to the screaming he will begin throwing things or hitting.
You should respond to the screaming, just do not respond by giving him what he wants. Respond with offering him other options, calm down strategies, etc.
True or false: A behavior is a negative thing
False- a behavior is any behavior an individual does. Positive, negative, or neutral!
What is the dead man's test?
If a dead man can do it, it is NOT behavior
When a student goes over to the desk when he is supposed to be reading independently to grab his iPad, what is the function of the behavior
Tangible
A- Zack's Mom drives him to school
B- Zack refuses to get out of the car and screams to go home
C- Zack's Mom takes him home
Yes! Zack wanted to escape going to school and he got to go home.
How would you respond if: you tell a students it is time to clean up and they start banging their head against the floor?
Safety first! Make sure the student is safe. But do this in a way that does not reinforce the behavior by giving him what he wants. Instead, if an option, work on teaching him an appropriate way to ask for more time. Or remind him when he can play again and what he needs to do first.
Is sitting in a chair a behavior?
Yes
Why do we take ABC data?
To help us see the patterns of behavior
What are the 4 main functions of behavior?
Attention, Escape, Tangible & Automatic
A- Grace takes the toy Jayden was playing with
B- Jayden uses his words to say "I was playing with that, can I have it back?"
C- Grace does not give the toy back and no adult steps in to help
No! Jayden was trying to gain access to a tangible in an appropriate way, but it was not reinforced. Unfortunately Jayden may try an inappropriate way next time.
How would you respond if: you are outside at recess and a student runs off and is watching you and laughing as you chase them?
This is a tricky one because obviously safety comes first! If it is safe to do so- do not chase them. If it is not safe, call other staff over to help you to minimize the game. Then we need to try and prevent this child having the opportunity to do that next time.
