In what year was Chat GPT first released?
2022
Did AI contribute to the creation of any part of this presentation?
No. If it did, it would have been cited ;)
Situation: If a classmate asks for your work with the intent of copying it and you allow them to use your answers, who gets in trouble for academic dishonesty?
BOTH students
Situation: You ask AI to generate visuals to include in a Google Slides presentation for a project (e.g. “Create a picture of ancient Roman clients at the home of their patron.”)
Is that allowed under the Newton Public Schools Academic Honesty Policy?
Yes! As long as you cite your sources. In a Google Slides presentation, all non-stock images sources from the internet must be sourced anyways.
Situation: You use Google Translate or Word Reference like a dictionary – you just want to look up a few words and phrases.
Is that allowed under the Newton Public Schools Academic Honesty Policy?
Yes: IF you have permission to use a dictionary as a resource, cite it! Generally, looking up a few words helps you learn new ways to enhance your expression.
Situation: You and your friend collaborate together on a homework assignment. You both turn the work in as your own. What TWO conditions are needed for this to be permissible?
It is ONLY allowed if you 1. Have permission to collaborate from your teacher and 2. State that you have collaborated with that student on that assignment.
Situation: On an ungraded homework assignment, you ask ChatGPT to make corrections to your writing, highlighting specific changes and explaining your errors.
Is that allowed under the Newton Public Schools Academic Honesty Policy?
Yes! Identifying mistakes we make is key to the learning process. It can be helpful to use AI to hone in on errors you are making (and this is key: YOU are the one creating your own language with your own errors!). Be careful to target specific elements, so that the feedback is appropriate to your level and it isn’t overwhelming. As you prepare for a summative, take action on the feedback that you’ve received!
Situation: I did my project online like we were supposed to. Google autocorrected my spelling and made some grammar suggestions, so I accepted them just like I do in English.
Is that allowed under the Newton Public Schools Academic Honesty Policy?
No: In this case you did NOT cite your resources and you accepted and passed the suggestions as your own. It can be helpful to use this tool to hone in on errors you are making, but passing off the new language as your own is not allowed.
In the first instance of academic dishonesty, what is the implication for the student's grade?
There will be an opportunity for the student to recover full credit with a new or revised assignment at the teacher’s discretion.
Situation: You tell ChatGPT what you want to say in an essay as you prepare for an in-class writing assignment. Then, you memorize the language it gives you so you can write it out in class the next day.
Is that allowed under the Newton Public Schools Academic Honesty Policy?
No! While you may be presenting your own ideas (good!), our work in language class is to develop the skills necessary to express your original thoughts and ideas. Don’t farm this work out! While memorization is a strategy (and quite valuable if you’re into theater!), your brain needs to find the routes to express your own ideas."
Situation: You tell Google Translate what you want to say in an essay in English as you prepare for an in-class writing assignment. Then, you have it translated into the language your assessment is in (example, Spanish, French, Chinese etc.) and memorize the language it gives you so you can write it out in class the next day.
Is that allowed under the Newton Public Schools Academic Honesty Policy?
No: Using a resource to give you phrases and sentences eliminates the work your brain is doing to learn how to structure your ideas. Therefore, that is not your language and you did not cite your sources.
In the second instance of academic dishonesty, what are TWO consequences?
1. There will be another conversation between the teacher and student, and the dean will communicate directly with the family.
2. A Saturday school detention is assigned, and a Restorative Process is initiated by the Restorative Justice coordinators or counselor.
3. There will be an opportunity for the student to recover partial credit (up to a C) with a new or revised assignment at the teacher’s discretion.
Situation: You ask ChatGPT to generate texts at a specific level of proficiency to help you study for a reading assessment.
Is that allowed under the Newton Public Schools Academic Honesty Policy?
Yes! Good for you for creating new resources to practice your language skills!
Situation: I totally didn’t get the reading – it was way too hard. I had to use Google translate to understand it!
Is that allowed under the Newton Public Schools Academic Honesty Policy?
No: In this instance, you’ve outsourced the work to interpret this text. Not only is this not a permissible use, but you’re not going to learn to read more sophisticated texts if you let AI get all the brain-training. What can you do? First, make sense of the words you DO understand, then look up the words that block your understanding. Break the reading into smaller chunks. And remember that you don’t need to understand EVERYTHING to get the main idea. Check in with your teacher if you need better strategies.
In the THIRD instance of academic dishonesty, what are THREE consequence?
1. There will be another conversation between the teacher and student.
2. The dean will communicate directly with the family.
3. An in-school suspension is assigned, and a Restorative Process is initiated.
4. There will be an opportunity for the student to earn up to a D with a new or revised assignment at the teacher’s discretion
