What is a syllabus?
A syllabus is an overview of the course, prerequisites, student learning outcomes, grade distribution/weights, calendar of assignments, and introduction to the instructor's policies.
Why do you need to communicate with your instructors?
Your instructor can help you understand material that may be problematic, extend a deadline because you are ill, and so forth.

Time management is effectively working on assigned tasks for the class.
If I fill out my IEP for the high school, do I need to fill accommodations with NLC?

Academic rigor promotes critical thinking and challenges for students.
Why do I need to know about grade distribution for this class?
The students need to know which assignments they will be doing in the class and the percentage for each assignment category.
Why do I need to let my instructor that I am sick?
You may not be able to finish your assignment by the deadline, especially if you have been working on the assignment diligently.
When should I start working on an assignment?
I should start working as soon I receive the assignment.
Does my counselor start the college accommodations' process for me?
No, the student is responsible starting the College accommodations process.
Can I use AI in some of my college classes?
Read the instructor's syllabus and assignment guidelines about AI usage. If you are in doubt, ask the instructor.
How do I know what we are doing in class the next day?
Read the syllabus.
Why do I need to tell my instructor that I am having computer problems?
You may not be able to complete your assignments in a timely manner. Computer problems also may prevent you from submitting your assignments in the correct format.
If a quiz has been available for you to take for a week, should I wait until the last day to take the quiz?
No.
Will my accommodations for the college look the same as my high school accommodations?
Yes and no. It depends on the accommodations request.
Should I complain about the amount of reading and/or assignments for a class?
Think about the course you are taking and act appropriately.
Are all syllabi alike?
No.
What tone should I use when I am emailing my instructor?
It should be respectful.
When is a good time to start studying for a quiz/test?
You should start studying when you get the study guide, or if you notice a quiz or test is a few weeks away on the syllabus, start studying early.
How often do I need to fill out my college accommodations?
You need to fill out the accommodations each semester.
If I use Grammarly or other service like Grammarly to revise my sentence structure, is that considered AI usage?
Yes. You may earn a zero for the assignment.
How do I find the syllabus for the class?
Most of the instructors use CANVAS and a copy of the syllabus is in CANVAS. Some instructors give a hard copy of the syllabus. Ultimately, the instructor will show and/or tell you where to find the syllabus.
Should I ask if I can make-up an assignment?
Yes.
What is the appropriate amount of time you should spend studying?
Most college classes meet for a number of “credit hours” – typically 3 or 4. The general rule of thumb (and the definition of credit hour adopted by the Department of Education) is that students should spend approximately 2–3 hours on outside-of-class work for each credit hour or hour spent in the classroom. What do I do if my instructor does not honor my accommodations?
First, make sure you submitted your accommodations and shared those accommodations with all of your instructors. If you have done all of these things, contact the NLC SAS office.
Should I use AI to write my essay for my English class?
No, you need to write the essay yourself. You are not learning anything by letting the computer write the essay for you.
