Specific and individualized instructional, environmental and assessment strategies required for a student to meet curriculum expectations for a grade/course.
What is accommodations?
Adjustments to the grade-appropriate curriculum expectations to better fit a student’s specific educational needs.
What is modifications?
A written plan describing the special education program and/or services required by a particular student, based on a thorough assessment of the student’s strengths and needs – that is, the strengths and needs that affect the student’s ability to learn and to demonstrate learning;
What is an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)?
You often notice a student has a lot of anxiety around testing and will blankly stare at the clock, tap and sometimes even have a panic attack which affects them being able to complete their test on time.
What is assessment accommodations?
There are three different types of accommodations.
What is instructional, environmental and assessment?
If a student is modified, the _____ and/or instruction changes.
What is curriculum?
Give one example of what is NOT an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
What is (any one of the following):
• a description of everything that will be taught to the student;
• a list of all the teaching strategies used in regular classroom instruction;
• a document that records all learning expectations, including those that are not modified from the regular grade level curriculum expectations;
• a daily lesson plan.
?
It is almost the start of a school year. You have a student named Scott in your classroom. Scott's previous Grade 3 teacher stated she used SMART goals. Is he modified or accommodated based off your knowledge of "SMART goals"?
What is modification(s) for Scott using the SMART goal setting framework?
Two examples of instructional accommodations.
What is (any of the following):
• Extra time for processing information;
• Oral and written instructions;
• Use of visuals;
• Photocopies of notes;
• Study guides;
• Use of manipulative or concrete materials;
• Chunking of information;
• Colour coding of information;
• Small group instruction.
?
If you know you have a student coming into your class who is on a modified curriculum, before the start of a school year you should always review previous ______ _____ to obtain information on the student's previous level of achievement.
What is report cards?
Regulation 181/98, subsection 6(8), as amended by Ontario Regulation 137/01, requires the _______ , within 30 school days after placement of the pupil in the program, to ensure that the plan is completed and a copy of it sent to a parent of the pupil and, where the pupil is 16 years of age or older, the pupil.
What is the principal?
Ryan uses assistive technology, mostly in relation to note taking. Your same grade teaching partner is wondering if you accommodate or modify this student if they use assistive technology then?
What is accommodate?
Two examples of assessment accommodations.
What is (any two of the following):
• Additional time;
• Use of a scribe for verbatim recording of responses;
• Use of computer and/or assistive technology;
• Use of a calculator;
• Prompts to return attention to task;
• Choice of assessment tasks
?
Not all but SOME students may require their needs to be formally identified as an exceptionality through a Committee.
What is an Identification Placement and Review Committee (IPRC)?
There are either one of two reasons for developing an IEP for a student. State the two reasons.
What is (variations that are similar are okay):
• The student has been identified as exceptional by an IPRC.
• The student has not been formally identified as exceptional but requires an ongoing special education program and/or services, including modified or alternative learning expectations and/or accommodations.
Your student Jayden has not be identified but will constantly get up and move his desk as he pleases to anywhere in the classroom; even sometimes in a way so his back will be to you while speaking. Jayden has not been identified with any specific learning or behavioural needs. This is the only behavioural issue he exhibits and will only do it as he states when he "feels like not doing any work". After evaluating the behaviour, the principal has told you that you need to incorporate all learning styles into your teaching practices.
What is not an accommodation or modification?
One example of an environmental accommodation
What is (either is fine):
• Preferential seating (in a specific location to support student’s needs);
• Alternative work location
?
The IPRC Committee determines if a student meets the criteria for identification based off of five categories of exceptionalities. These categories are: Behavioural, Communication, Intellectual, Physical and Multiple. Within these categories state one example of an exceptionality.
What is (any of the following from any category is okay):
- Behaviour disability
- Autism, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Speech Impairment, Language Impairment, Learning Disabilities
- Gifted, Mild Intellectual Disability, Developmental Disability
- Physical Disability, Blind and Low Vision
- Multiple Exceptionalities (2 or more prominent)
?
The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process involves five phases. State the last phase.
What is review and update the IEP?
