2013 – The assessment was first developed in the 1970’s. It has gone through several revisions. Our former edition was from 2001. Scores cannot be compared from one edition to the next.

There are 2 parts to the ACRE assessment. What does Part 1 assess?
Religious Knowledge: Part 1 asks questions about the teachings of the Church. Score from Part 1 reveal students’ cognitive or “head” knowledge of Catholicism.

How much time does it take to complete the ACRE assessment?
Approximately 70 minutes: 10 min to explain the purpose of ACRE and prepare the answer sheet; 45 minutes to read the directions and complete Part 1; 15 minutes to read the directions and complete Part 2. These times are estimates. There is not a specific time limit for ACRE. ACRE can be taken in 1 or 2 settings (Part 1 and 2 in the same setting or Part 1 and 2 in separate settings). It is also now available to take online.

Personal Beliefs, Attitudes, Practices, and Perceptions: Part 2 asks questions about personal beliefs, attitudes, practices, and perceptions. Scores from Part 2 reveal students’ affective knowledge and practice or “heart and hands” knowledge of Catholicism.

Why was new content added to the 2013 edition?
New content was added to strengthen the alignment with the USCCB document Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework. This document indicates the elements from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) that should be taught to young people.

The Level 1 (5th grade) assessment represents cumulative content from grades 1-5. The Level 2 (8th grade) assessment represents cumulative content from grades 1-8.

Why is Part 2 (Personal Beliefs, Attitudes, Practices, and Perceptions) intended to be confidential?
Part 2 is intended to be confidential so that students feel safe giving honest responses. The reliability and usefulness of the data from this section relies on the fidelity to a safe testing environment created by the school.

How was the format of reports for Part 1 changed in the 2013 edition?
The reports originally provided information on 8 topics. In the 2013 edition, these topics were restructured to align with the 6 Tasks of Catechesis. There is also a report that restructures the topics to align with the 4 pillars of the Catechism.

What accommodations can be made for students when taking ACRE?
The questions and answer choices can be read aloud, extended time can be given, and a separate location can be provided. Question booklets are also available in Spanish. However, questions/answer choices should NOT be explained, and vocabulary should not be defined.

The 2013 edition is named NCEA IFG: ACRE edition. What does this acronym represent?
National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) Information for Growth (IFG): Assessment of Children/Youth Religious Education (ACRE). The same assessment is used for school and parish programs.
