Stop to Think 1
What are some common structures of cells?
Cell Membrane & Cytoplasm
What do mitochondria use to produce energy for a cell?
Oxygen
Site of photosynthesis
Chloroplast
Controls what comes in and out of the cell
Cell Membrane
Process that uses oxygen and food to provide the cell with energy and releases carbon dioxide
Cellular respiration
Why do cells need matter?
to build new cell substances and structures and to obtain energy from cellular respiration
Why do plant cells have a cell wall in addition to a cell membrane?
The cell wall provides additional support and stability to a plant cell.
The powerhouse of the cells, make energy from cellular respiration.
Mitochondria
Directs all of the cell's activities and holds genetic material.
Nucleus
"little organs" in a cell
organelles
Why is the nucleus an important part of most cells?
The nucleus contains genetic material and directs the cell's activities.
Would you expect to find more chloroplasts in leaf cells or root cells? Why?
Leaf cells. Chloroplasts take in sunlight during photosynthesis, and roots are underground.
Produce Protiens
Ribosomes
Fills up the cell and is the location of many reactions
Cytoplasm
NON-living microbe that is not made of cells but can still cause diseases like the flu.
virus
What type of organism does not contain a nucleus?
Bacteria
What two structures do protists have that bacteria do not?
Mitochondria and Nucleus
Stores substances for the cell
Vacuole
Breaks down waste and toxins
Lysosome
Living things that do have a nucleus (animals, plants, fungus and protists)
eukaryotes
Why do different cells have different numbers of mitochondria?
Some cells, like muscle cells, need more energy than others.
Do all microbes cause disease? Explain your answer
No, many microbes are harmless (paramecium & euglena) and some are even useful (yeast)
Modifies and ships out proteins
Golgi Apparatus
Maze around the nucleus, involved in the production of proteins and lipids
Endoplasmic reticulum
Living things that do not have a nucleus (bacteria and archaea)
Prokayotes
