Add additional content such as using it in a sentence to indicate the meaning and proper pronunciation:
past tense: read
future tense: read

Yes it is a requirement! This enables the screen reader to properly read the page to the user with the correct inflection and pronunciation

Everyone! That's right it is universal usability!

DAILY DOUBLE: Yes! While you can include an icon or color changes the fact that there's an error requires it be explicit and include text!

a runny nose from eating spicy foods
Is there a difference between language settings for American versus UK English?
Yes! In fact, there's many languages that provide multiple settings depending on the inflection or other changes

Nope! The user needs to know how to fix the error so error messages need to include that information.

Can a screen reader read character languages like Chinese in English using a lang attribute?
Somewhat... It will tell the user what language it is in, but unless the screen reader is set to include that language, it is best to offer interactive elements (such as links) in both the language of the page and in alternative languages.
