Name each of the Earth’s spheres and define them. (K/U)
What is the Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere?
1. Lithosphere: the hard part of the Earth’s surface.
2. Hydrosphere: all the water found on Earth, including lakes, oceans, and groundwater.
3. Atmosphere: the layer of gases above the Earth’s surface.
What are the three main methods to separate mixtures? (K/U)
1) Using a filter
2) Distillation
3) Using a magnet
Name five different types of stars. (K/U)
1. Red giant
2. Red supergiant
3. Red dwarf
4. White dwarf
5. Neutron star
What happens when a negatively charged rod is brought near a neutral pith ball? (K/U)
The induced charge separation on the pith ball causes it to swing toward the rod.
There is a rally going on to protest against using biocontrol methods that increase the numbers of predators or parasites in ecosystems against ecosystem engineers. Would you go to the rally? If no explain why. (T)
No wrong answer it is up to the host on whether they feel like the player gave a reasonable answer.
Answer: No because if the parasites and predators are increased, they may be a threat to the rest of the ecosystem and affect the ecosystem in a harmful way, while trying to get rid of the native species.
Decide whether each of the following is a mixture or a pure substance. Explain your reasoning. (T)
a. Gold b. Salt water c. A pencil
a) It is a pure substance because it is made up of one particle.
b) It is a mixture because it is made up of more than one kind of particle, there is water, the H2o, coloreine, and sodium. NaCl=salt+H20=water.
c) It is a mixture because it is made up of more than one particle, graphite and wood.
Create a table with 4 celestial objects and define them. (T)
Object Definition
Asteroid: A small object that ranges in size from a tiny speck to 500 km wide
Meteoroid: A piece of rock moving through space
Meteor: A streak in the night sky
Meteorite/meteoric dust: The leftover matter when a meteoroid hits Earth’s surface
Why does lightening follow a jagged path? (T)
Lightening takes a jagged course since the dust particles in the air don't transfer electrons well. Which disrupts the path of the electric current within lightening forcing it to change course and appear as a zig zag.
Create a slogan for a public awarenses campaign to identify three human activities that have a negative effect on biodiversity. (C)
All for one and one for all, we must stop deforestration, pollution, and draining forestration, or our ecosystem will fall!
Compounds and Elements have specific physical and chemical properties that determine their practical uses. Create an adverisement for gold or diamonds, and briefly explain how their properties make them useful for many applications. (C)
BLING, BLING. Buy our diamonds today, our diamonds can help to create fires with its glistening reflection, our top quality diamonds NEVER get worn-out or torn-out and always add a unique touch and “spark” in your life! BLING, BLING
Pick one type of star, and describe its life cycle in a either a poem or a short story. (C)
Once there was a star named mini. He belonged to the White Dwarf family. His family was not a very bright family but rather a much dimmer and small family, hence the name dwarf family. His family were very hot and blue compared to many of the other stars. He was given the name mini because of how small he was. One day he wanted to become a red dwarf and keep on climbing up to become a supergiant. However, he faced an obstacle, it was that he came across a black hole which was about to swallow him and his entire family up. Then, him and his family ended up getting swallowed up by the unknown black hole and were never to be seen again.
You are a Journalist doing research on which is teh best cell to use in flashlights. Briefly explain what cell is best to use in a flashlight, based on use and cost.
The best cell to use in a flashlight would be the secondary cell since it is rechargeable and can be used more than once. Also, since it is better for the environment because you are not using a battery once and throwing it out repeatedly. Lastly, it is much cheaper than buying a primary cell since buying one practically lasts forever. Whereas, the primary cell is a one time use and you have to discard it once you are done.
Calculate the units of energy at each trophic level assuming the trophic efficiency is 10%. (A)
grass=2456 -> grasshopper -> frog -> snake ->hawk
What is 245.6, 24.56, 2.456, 0.2456?
In car radiators there are coolants and the properties of water contribute to its use as a coolant. In a short summary explain how so. (A)
The properties of water act as a coolant towards the car radiators that produce heat. So the properties of water help to reduce the heat and cool it down, stopping the car from overheating and possibly exploding. In simpler words, the properties of water act as a coolant towards the heat being produced by the radiator, thus helping the car radiator from overheating and exploding.
Write a short summary on what is the difference between a commet and most asteroids? (A)
Most asteroids orbit the Sun in a band, called the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. Whereas some commits visit the Sun just once and others orbit the sun and are called periodic comets. Also, asteroids are made up of metals and rocky materials, while comets are made up of dust, rocky materials, and ice. This is the case because asteroids form very close to the Sun making it impossible to form ice and not melt because of the heat coming from the Sun. Furthermore, the comets can form ice since it is not as close to the Sun as asteroids allowing it to form ice and not melt like asteroids.
The current in a car's headlight, that is connected to a 12V battery, is 0.80 A. What is the resistance of the headlight. (A)
R= V / I
=12V / 0.80
= 15 Ω
Therefore, the resistance of the headlight is 15 ohms
